RSL fells Timbers for 15th victory

SANDY — Javier Morales and Fabian Espindola stepped up in Alvaro Saborio’s absence.

Morales and Espindola both scored in the first half to lead Salt Lake to a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RSL: No score, but no loss

SANDY — While Real Salt Lake didn’t pick up a full three points on Wednesday night, it certainly took a strong step forward.

Real Salt Lake players are, from left, midfielder Will Johnson; forward Alvaro Saborio, of Costa Rica; Espindola; and midfielder Ned Grabavoy (20).

Espindola’s two goals lift Real Salt Lake

CARSON, Calif. – The Claret-and-Cobalt picked up right where they left off.

Fabian Espindola scored twice and a Will Johnson added a late tally as Real Salt Lake stayed at the top of the Major League Soccer table with a convincing 3-0 result against CD Chivas USA on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center.

RSL prepares to shift out of idle

It's time for Real Salt Lake to get back to work.

With the lengthy international window at last in the rearview mirror, RSL looks to keep the momentum at its back as it gears up for a key five-match, 19-day stretch that culminates with a Sandy showdown against Seattle.

RSL is on top, but Galaxy is disappointing

With Real Salt Lake holding down the top spot of the Major League Soccer table while the league is idle due to the international qualifying window, it might be a good time to take a look around the league as the season approaches its official mid-point.

While several familiar faces are in expected positions, a handful of sides are in unfamiliar territory.

RSL draws Champions League opponents

NEW YORK -- Real Salt Lake will join MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy and three other league teams will play in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League.

The group stage draw was held Tuesday, with each of the MLS teams in different groups. The stage begins July 31.

NEW YORK — Real Salt Lake will join MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy and three other league teams will play in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League.

RSL players: We're picking and choosing when to fight

Not too long after Real Salt Lake was unceremoniously dumped in its U.S. Open Cup tilt, coach Jason Kreis issued a near ultimatum, and a pair of long time veterans vented their frustrations at a dismal on-field effort.

"We will go back to the drawing board, and we'll make sure that everybody on my squad right now recognizes that there is only one way to play here, and that's to give your best, and if you're not going to, you need to stand up and move aside," Kreis said. "The coaching staff is waiting for me as well as the trainers. We are going to look at the next 2 ¬½ weeks. I've said this once before in my coaching career and I'll say it now ... I would not want to be a player under me right now."

Kevin Baxter: Galaxy's decline tough to fathom

LOS ANGELES - Last November the Galaxy capped perhaps the most dominant season in Major League Soccer history by beating the Houston Dynamo to win the MLS Cup.

Real Salt Lake goal keeper Kyle Reynish lies on the turf as the ball bounces around in the net after the Minnesota Stars scored on a penalty kick in the first half of a U.S. Open Cup soccer game Tuesday, May 29, 2012, in Sandy, Utah.

Stars shock RSL in U.S. Open Cup tilt

SANDY -- While it arguably did everything right in the build-up and approach, Real Salt Lake couldn't dial home the result it was seeking Tuesday night.

Despite having its ownership shell out what was likely a five-figure buyout to purchase hosting rights, and a stellar crowd of more than 17,000 fans, Salt Lake's run in the 2012 edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ended with a whimper in a 3-1 setback to the Minnesota Stars at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Late-game 'mayhem' frustrating RSL

When Alvaro Saborio calmly headed home Terukazu Tanaka's cross from the corner, Real Salt Lake looked to have taken firm command of its clash with FC Dallas after a fairly uninspiring opening hour.

A goal advantage against the rapidly sinking Hoops in the friendly confines of Rio Tinto Stadium, was a seemingly safe bet with just a half-hour to play.

Borchers' late goal lifts RSL in thriller

SANDY -- Say what you will about Real Salt Lake's performance on Saturday night, but you can't say they don't know how to put on a show.

Central defender Nat Borchers, wearing the captain's armband during Kyle Beckerman's absence for U.S. national team duty, put the finishing touches on thrilling home result when he smashed home an eight-yard left-to-right rocket in the third minute of stoppage time, lifting RSL to a 3-2 victory over rival FC Dallas at Rio Tinto Stadium.

"It was a relief to get that last goal," Borchers said. "We gave up a couple of goals that we don't normally give up. It was just fortuitous that the ball came to me, and I was able to get a hit on it."

After sitting pretty, RSL gets back to work

SANDY --With two weeks gone by since Real Salt Lake's scintillating road win at rival Seattle, the Utah side is ready to get back to business.

Real hosts longtime Western Conference rival FC Dallas tonight at 7 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Rio Tinto Stadium, a match that in most seasons would have massive implications on the table.

While RSL (8-3-2, 26 points) trails table leader San Jose by a single point in even matches played, Dallas has come undone at the seams though its first 14 matches with injury and misfortune.

RSL defied naysayers, came up big without Morales

Just hours before kickoff of Real Salt Lake’s match with Seattle on Saturday night, I bumped into an old friend, and longtime RSL supporter, in my neighborhood coffee shop.

Inevitably, while his wife was patiently waiting, the conversation turned to Real and, of course, the showdown with the Sounders.
