FARR WEST — The Tigers secured only half their prize.

Dickson hands Morgan home win

MORGAN — Dallin Dickson delivered a two-out RBI single on Friday afternoon, helping Morgan High rally for an early 5-0 deficit to claim an 8-7 win over Grantsville in Region 11 baseball action.

Morgan Trojans win first boys basketball title in 39 years

OGDEN – The story is well-chronicled. Back in 1974, Jim Wiscombe, senior guard for the Morgan boys basketball team, led the Trojans to its first and only state championship. The team, under the tutelage of coaching legend Ron Abegglen, went undefeated and Wiscombe was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Eventually Wiscombe returned to Morgan as its head coach. Since then, he has worked hard to bring another championship to the school.

He’s been extremely successful, with a number of region titles and state tournament appearances under his belt. But a championship has eluded him. Two years ago, the Trojans came close to winning it all, reaching the championship game against Wasatch. But the Wasps were too strong that night and Wiscombe and the Trojans were forced to continue waiting.

Well, the 39-year wait is finally over. With a remarkable 58-44 win over their fiercest rival, Bear River, the Trojans have once again reached the pinnacle of basketball, capturing the state 3-A title on a snowy Saturday night at the Dee Events Center in front of a huge throng of supporters.

Morgan Trojans deliver in clutch, will play Bear River for state 3-A boys basketball crown

OGDEN – In their biggest game of the year – the 3-A state semifinals -- the Morgan Trojans rolled slowly out of the gates, spotting nemesis Wasatch the first nine points of the game.

But a consistent, never-quit effort, backed by a huge, enthusiastic crowd, pushed the Trojans to a memorable 52-50 comeback win over the Wasps late Friday night at Weber State’s Dee Events Center.

Morgan girls eliminated from state 3-A basketball tourney

OGDEN – In two games during the 3-A state tournament, the Morgan Trojans had things happen to them that are almost unheard of for a Morgan girls basketball team.

On Thursday night against Desert Hills, they recorded a goose-egg in the first quarter and went 4-for-34 from the floor for the entire game. That’s 12 percent shooting. Predictably, the Trojans lost by 22.

Morgan girls suffer tough 3-A quarterfinal loss to taller Thunder

OGDEN — Sporting a front line of three girls six feet or taller, the Desert Hills Thunder basketball team is one imposing group.

So intimidating are the Thunder that the Morgan Trojans didn’t manage a single point in the first quarter Thursday night, while Desert Hills dropped in 10. That early deficit, too much for the Trojans to overcome, led to a 42-20 victory for Desert Hills in the nightcap of the 3-A state basketball tournament at the Dee Events Center.

Miles, Morgan advance to state 3-A boys basketball semifinals

OGDEN – As amazing as Jake Miles is, the Morgan Trojans are much more than a single player.

Miles scored 16 points on Thursday, but he got a huge lift from his teammates as the Trojans knocked off Cedar, 69-57, to advance to the state 3-A semifinals at the Dee Events Center.

Ben Saunders came off the bench to score 11 big points, Camen Gray – another substitute – added nine, while starters Bridger Streadbeck and Cameron Skinner scored nine apiece. Lantzen Toomer chipped in with seven points and three assists and Matt Murdock had six steals, five points and four assists. It was, without question, a total team effort.

Trojans use history to motivate present

MORGAN — It was a game played 11 years ago, but the Morgan Trojans still use it as a reminder to take seriously the first round, one-and-done 3-A state playoff game.

Lancers upend Royals in girls basketball tourney

ROY — Like a frenzied holiday shopper, the Layton Lancers put off their comeback until late, but it was in just enough time for Layton to earn a 63-60 win over Roy in the final game of the Royal Winter Tournament.

The Royals led 42-37 after three quarters, but a few turnovers in the final minutes helped the Lancers pull off the win.

Morgan students climb hill to avoid mock flood

MORGAN — If the East Canyon, Lost Creek, Echo or Rockport dams above Morgan Valley ruptured, students in the city below would have 25 minutes to get away from the approaching flood, said Ken Adams, Morgan County Schools superintendent.

That grim scenario prompted Morgan County schools to hold an emergency evacuation drill Wednesday for about 1,800 students. The shoulder-to-shoulder procession of Morgan preschool, elementary, middle and high school students wound its way up 100 South until the crowd reached Wilkinson Construction Company, 1200 E. 100 South, at the top of the hill.

Kafentzis rips up Silver Wolves’ D in Plain City

PLAIN CITY — After consecutive trips to the state 5-A championship game, Fremont coach Kory Bosgieter knew his young team was in for some hard knocks early in the season. What he probably wasn’t anticipating, however, was watching his team get blown out on its own field in the season opener.

But that’s what happened.

Sophomore quarterback Austin Kafentzis passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Jordan Beetdiggers worked Fremont over with an easy 53-12 win.

Prep sports: Bees, Bears tune up for run at softball championship

GARLAND -- It is always sweet to upend your crosscounty rival, but the Bees have bigger fish to catch.

Box Elder, chasing the Region 5 softball title along with Roy High, tangles with Bonneville and the defending state 5-A champion Royals next week on the road.

"I'm excited for next week. It's always fun to play Bonneville and Roy," said Bees junior right-hander Baylee Reeves. "We always have them at the end (of the season). We want to win that league title."
