Morgan students plug into Internet safety

OGDEN -- Morgan School District is the first in this area to adopt a new cybersafety program to educate teachers and students about positive Internet guidelines and ethics.

The program is Generation Safe, and nicknamed iKeepSafe. Former Utah first lady Jaclyn Leavitt, who is championing the program, spoke Wednesday at Morgan Middle School, first to school administrators about program features, then to a seventh-grade class, to whom she taught a digital lesson plan about philanthropy.

"It's about the safe and healthy use of technology," Leavitt told administrators. "Our children need to have these computer skills. If they don't, it will hurt them with future employers. But we also need to protect them, detect inappropriate use of the Internet and intervene when there is a problem."

Although the number of respondents is small and officials lack consistent data, a Weber Human Services representative said she is concerned because the survey revealed some of the shocking conditions in which teens illegally drink in Morgan County.

Morgan school employee placed on leave during criminal investigation

MORGAN — The school district here put a Morgan High School employee on administrative leave last week while the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office conducts a criminal investigation.

Whooping cough scare sends 65 Ogden students home

OGDEN -- Sixty-five unimmunized students from Mount Ogden Junior High School were sent home for at least five days Monday morning after the school was notified that one of its students had been diagnosed with whooping cough.

Morgan deputies, parents keeping eye out for child abduction suspect

MORGAN -- It has been a week since an attempted child abduction at a school bus stop, but investigating officers are no closer to uncovering any clues and the community is uneasy.

On Oct. 11, a man asked a 9-year-old girl to come talk with him soon after she got off the bus. He said he would hurt her if she didn't. The girl ran away.

Morgan district working on fee policy for new rec center

MORGAN -- District officials are making sure they have things in order before the public comes knocking on the doors of the Trojan Century Center, a 46,000-square-foot physical education center scheduled for January 2012 completion.

U-PASS scores please majority of area schools

Most of the school districts in the Top of Utah did pretty well on the U-PASS report released this month.

The tests document the achievement and progress of individual students over the years, awarding scores for math, science, language arts and participation, which includes attendance. High school numbers also include graduation rates.

Morgan board names new member

MORGAN -- The Morgan County School Board recently appointed Jody Hipwell to complete the term of the late Earl Ericksen until December 2012.

Ericksen, 87, died July 12 after 18 years on the school board.

Mixed bag of results in state board's school progress reports

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah State Board of Education has released Adequate Yearly Progress reports on area schools, and most schools' scores reveal a mixed bag of academic strengths and weaknesses.

The small Morgan School District has the most to crow about, with all of its schools passing.

Surprising no one is the fact that the inner-city Ogden School District is struggling as a result of student poverty and a high demand for coursework in English as a second language.

Morgan district gets moving on future sites

MORGAN -- Ground is being moved at the future sites of the Morgan School District Trojan Century Center and the district transportation facility. By February, the district's newest construction projects should be complete.
