450 motocross riders to rev it up in Davis County this weekend

FARMINGTON -- It is a motocross event so big, one dirt-track arena couldn't hold it.

More than 450 riders, ranging in age from 2 to 60 years old are expected to ride in what is being billed as the state's first motocross competition involving an indoor/outdoor arena track, said Chad R. Bangerter, event promoter.

Supercross season kicks off on Saturday

Ryan Villopoto bounced back from two years of injury and illness to have one of the greatest seasons in motocross history, taking home Supercross and outdoor titles, along with scoring the richest payday in the sport's history.

So what does he plan for an encore?

Well, it's not really a plan. He spent the offseason working to get himself in the best shape possible and will simply climb back on his dirt bike, see where it takes him.

With horse numbers falling, Legacy refocuses efforts

FARMINGTON -- With Davis County home construction putting the squeeze on open pasture lands where horses once grazed -- forcing some horse owners to relocate -- Davis County Legacy Events Center is diversifying the groups it attracts.

Being able to rely on renting out Legacy Events Center's indoor and outdoor arenas to horse riders to supplement the operating cost of the buildings is no longer feasible, officials say.

Villopoto rides to motocross richest prize

LAS VEGAS -- Normally stoic, even in victory, Ryan Villopoto had a hard time getting the words out.

"We've had a (great) year, to back it up next year is going to be hard, and if we do it'll be another unyear real, un- ... sorry ... unreal year," he said.

Holding a $1 million check will do that to you.

Winter motocross events coming Legacy Events Center

FARMINGTON -- As the weather cools, the winter motocross season in Davis County is heating up.

The Davis County Commission recently approved a $20,400 rental agreement with Throttle 215 MX Park for a series of winter motocross events to be held at the Legacy Events Center indoor arena.

Brazilian motocross rider Zanoni dies in accident

SAO PAULO -- Brazilian motocross rider Swian Zanoni died after losing control of his motorcycle during the last lap of a weekend race. He was 23.

Zanoni apparently struck a tree Sunday in a race in the small city of Orizania, the Brazilian motorcycling confederation said. He sustained a severe neck injury while attempting to overtake another rider.

Motocross racers 'used to getting hurt'

POWDER MOUNTAIN -- Austin Jamieson has been riding motocross for nine years, half his life, and said the death of a rider at Powder Mountain's races Thursday won't stop him from continuing.

Dylan Perkins, 16, of Surprise, Ariz., died during a practice run Thursday when he landed wrong on one of the higher jumps on the course cut into the hillside next to the resort's parking lot.

Jamieson, 18, of Roy, said he didn't know Perkins personally but saw the accident and could tell how he got into trouble.

Teen rider killed at Powder Mountain motocross practice

EDEN — A motocross rider practicing for this weekend’s racing at Powder Mountain died Thursday when he crashed and sustained serious injuries.

Dylan Perkins, 16, had traveled from his hometown of Surprise, Ariz., to Eden for the third annual Monster Energy Powder Mountain Motocross racing event. The ski resort transformed its ski runs into a motocross stadium for a full weekend schedule of events.

Thursday was designated as a warm-up time for riders. The teenager was in his third practice lap on the track when, at 11 a.m., he took a serious spill.

Deaf motocross star Fiolek showed resolve early

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Her shiny blond hair framing wire-rimmed glasses that look three sizes too big, Ashley Fiolek giggles and smiles as she signs autographs just beyond the steps of California's golden-domed state capitol.

Petite and bubbly, the 20-year-old in neon colors looks more like a rock star than someone who spends her days in the dirt.

In a way, she kind of is.

Deaf since birth and one of the best female motocross riders in the world, Fiolek is an inspiration and role model on two wheels and two feet.

Pastrana brings Nitro Circus Live to Vegas

PALA, Calif. -- It's a circus, all right, and don't think for a minute that three rings are anywhere near enough to hold action sports wild man Travis Pastrana and his merry band of daredevils.

After playing to big crowds Down Under, Pastrana will unleash his Nitro Circus Live on North America for the first time in a one-off show Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Billed as the "greatest live action sports show of all time," Nitro Circus Live will include the standard fare of freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding while veering to outrageous stunts such as a guy nicknamed "Wheelz" doing flips in his wheelchair off the 50-foot Nitro Giganta Ramp.

Tight Supercross season closes out at Las Vegas

Ryan Villopoto ended his 2010 Supercross season on a stretcher, his leg mangled after a hard-to-watch crash at St. Louis.

A year later, he's on the verge of finishing off a cool comeback story, heading into this weekend's series finale in Las Vegas as the front-runner to win his first Supercross championship.

All Villopoto needs to do is get off to a good start, run near the front and stay on his bike.

The way this strange, jumbled season has gone, that could be tougher than it sounds.

"It's been gnarly because there's five guys that can win every race and you have to be on your game every weekend," Villopoto said "You just have to go out there and do nothing different, show up like it's a regular race."

Monster Energy: Villopoto wins in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY -- Ryan Villopoto raced to his sixth Monster Energy AMA Supercross victory of the season Saturday night at Rice Eccles Stadium to take a nine-point lead over Chad Reed into the season finale next weekend in Las Vegas

Villopoto, the Kawasaki star from Poulsbo, Wash., took the lead when James Stewart crashed midway through the race. Reed was second, and Ryan Dungey finished third.

"We have all done our work this year and it is paying off," Villopoto said. "It's a lot easier going into Vegas with a nine-point lead. Hopefully, I will be standing on top of the box next weekend."

GAME DAY: Monster Energy Supercross hits Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY -- Just two races remain in the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, and the competition is tighter than its even been in the history of the sport. Coming into Saturday's 16th stop of the season from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, four riders sit within nine points of the championship lead and are well within striking distance to claim the coveted title.

Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto is the rider the rest of the field is looking up at in the standings. With five wins to his credit and an impressive finishing average of 2.9 that is top in the class, on paper Villopoto looks like the rider to beat and has been for the majority of the season. With a solid outing at his home race in Seattle two weeks ago, Villopoto will look to maintain his consistency while also aiming for the top of the box, putting additional pressure on his rivals.

Golden girl racing with the guys in Arenacross

Vicki Golden wasn't looking to make history. She was just bored, wanted something to do during the break in the women's motocross season.

She ended up doing both.

One of the top up-and-coming riders in women's motocross, Golden has broken boys-only boundaries by becoming the first female rider to compete full-time on the Arenacross circuit.

OK, so maybe it isn't Danica Patrick winning an IndyCar race or Annika Sorenstam teeing it up on the PGA Tour. It's still a pretty significant step in a sport that's historically been known as a men's club.
