But the marriage between the football power and the shifting conference may be in jeopardy before it even begins.

MWC rebuffs Idaho's interest

University of Idaho Director of Athletics Rob Spear said the Vandal athletic program made its case to be admitted to the Mountain West Conference but ultimately was rejected, leaving it as only one of two remaining football schools in the Western Athletic Conference, which has been pilfered by the MWC and Conference USA in recent days.

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Nate Wolters scored 31 points and South Dakota State won for the 10th time in its last 12 games, defeating Southern Utah 66-56 Saturday night.

Wolters hit 10 of 16 shots from the floor and was 11 for 13 at the free-throw line. The junior guard has surpassed the 30-point mark four times this season and is averaging 21.3 points per game.

Griffan Callahan added 10 points for the Jackrabbits (19-6, 11-2 Summit).

Wolverines remain perfect in Great West Conference play

OREM -- Isiah Williams scored 26 points and Utah Valley remained unbeaten in the Great West Conference with an 81-58 victory over New Jersey Tech on Saturday night.

Holton Hunsaker added 19 points for the Wolverines (13-10, 3-0 Great West), who have won six straight. Geddes Robinson had 12 points and 18 rebounds, and Keith Thompson scored 11 points.

Mountain West has the best bowl record in the BCS era, but teams are leaving

As the Mountain West Conference prepares to head into the great unknown, here is some encouraging news.

Sort of.

The league's 29-17 record in bowl games since the BCS era began in 1998 is the best of any league still in existence. The only conference with a better postseason winning percentage during that span is the Big West, which went 3-0 in bowls from 1998-2000 before dropping its football affiliations.

Louisiana Tech rips NMSU, wins WAC

RUSTON, La. -- Louisiana Tech captured the school's first Western Athletic Conference championship since 2001 with a 44-0 victory over New Mexico State Saturday.

The Bulldogs (8-4, 6-1) also accepted a bid to the San Diego County Poinsettia Bowl on December 21st. The bowl bid is the fifth in school history and Louisiana Tech's first since an Independence Bowl victory over Northern Illinois in 2008.

After Matt Nelson's 32-yard field opened the scoring, Tech extended its lead to 9-0 on Colby Cameron's seven-yard touchdown pass to Taulib Ikharo.
