'Spirit Squad' moviemaker adds hazing scene to new film made in Ogden

OGDEN -- When Thom Rockwell began work six months ago on a trailer for his upcoming film "Spirit Squad," depicting five crime-fighting Ogden High School cheerleaders, he never imagined he might have to alter the fictional movie to include a dose of reality.

Man inspired by horror movie in killing of Layton woman bound for prison

SALT LAKE CITY — The man who admitted to killing a 25-year-old Layton woman a year ago has been sentenced to serve 15 years to life in Utah State Prison.

The body of Jessica Irene Jensen was found at the Capitol Motel in Salt Lake City on June 2 after a guest who checked into the room complained of a foul odor.

Police arrested Thomas Kumalac, 27, as he was trying to enter Wendover, Nev., and he pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder on Jan. 20.

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. -- Gerard Butler is OK after being held underwater by some big waves while filming for a movie about a surfer at Mavericks, a famed Northern California surf break known for treacherous, stories-high waves.

Public invited to free film screening

OGDEN — The public is invited to view an award-winning documentary, “The Oath,” about two men who were involved with al-Qaeda, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd.

The free showing is co-sponsored by the ACLU of Utah, Egyptian Theater, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden.

A review of the film states, “From the director of the Oscar-nominated ‘My Country, My Country,’ ‘The Oath’ is a spectacularly gripping documentary that unspools like a great political thriller.
