Mudslides close American Fork Canyon

An overflowing Weber River has forced the park to close. “A lot of revenue will be lost,” says Weber County Parks and Recreation Manager Jim Carter.

It's not just farming and business that will take a hit from existing and predicted flooding in the Top of Utah. The recreation and tourism industries also likely will be affected.

Residents told to sleep upstairs during mudslide season

FARMINGTON -- A key city emergency preparedness official has issued a letter of warning and advice to residents on how to deal with the possibility of mudslides over the next six weeks, suggesting among other things that people not sleep in the basement during that time frame.

In a recent story and headline about the potential for mudslides in Farmington, the Standard-Examiner mistakenly reported that the public should consider sleeping in their basements.

City Manager Dave Millheim suggested that, during this vulnerable time, sleeping in the basement is not advisable.

Mudslide potential 'real' in Farmington

FARMINGTON -- As the spring thaw continues amid a growing snowpack, Farmington officials are offering a cautionary note about the growing potential for mudslides.

"We've got a lot of snow in the mountains, and the stars are not lining up in our favor," City Manager Dave Millheim said of the potential for flooding and mudslides.

Mayor: Runoff may lead to mudslides

FARMINGTON -- Mayor Scott Harbertson said heavy runoff this spring poses more than a flooding concern for the city; it also raises the chance for mudslides in his community.

Harbertson is concerned the hillsides on the east of the city have been scarred of enough foliage by two fires in the past decade that heavy runoff will lead to a fallout of mud for people on the east side.
