Co-worker says Steve Powell spoke of Utah camping trip with Josh, kids

OLYMPIA, Wash. — A co-worker of Steve Powell says the father-in-law of Susan Powell planned to travel to Utah for a camping trip shortly before she disappeared in 2009, an attorney said Thursday.

After Friday's release of court documents linking Josh Powell to the 2009 disappearance of his wife, her family and prosecutors in Washington state questioned why he wasn't arrested for her murder before he killed himself and their two young children two months ago.

JonBenet Ramsey's father recalls slain daughter

JonBenet Ramsey's father, John Ramsey, has finally acknowledged what many Americans have long wanted to hear: He regrets showcasing his daughter in beauty pageants and parades. He also suggests that putting the girl front-and-center in the public eye might have contributed to the 6-year-old's killing.

Kiirsi Hellewell, friend of Susan Powell, hugs her father as she talks about the Powell family in Salt Lake County, Utah, Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012. Days after a judge ruled against Josh Powell in a child custody hearing, Powell and his two young sons were killed Sunday when police said he intentionally blew up a house with all three inside — a tragic ending to a bizarre case that began more than two years ago when Powell's wife Susan went mysteriously missing in Utah. Body exhumed for DNA of mystery man murdered in Idaho 29 years ago

LEWISTON, Idaho -- Four small yellow flags were the only indication of what lay below the frozen grass at Normal Hill Cemetery.

Using a square-bladed shovel, Greg Morton of Wilbert Precast quickly cut the sod into strips, setting it neatly to one side. With plywood protecting the grass, the bucket on a front-end loader, exactly the width of a grave, carved a hole the length and width of the concrete vault buried several feet down.

It was a sizable crowd that gathered to watch the grave of an unknown young man being reopened Wednesday morning: Nez Perce County deputies who obtained the $2,000 grant that will pay for the costs associated with exhumation, city police officers, the county coroner and his deputy, the grave diggers, a mortician and the news media.

AMC
Detectives Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) and Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) on “The Killing,” premiering tonight on AMC.

'The Killing' hauntingly compelling

For some viewers, particularly parents, AMC's "The Killing" may be too much to take. A cross between "Twin Peaks" and "Murder One," the show promos ask, "Who killed Rosie Larsen?" Detectives delve into the Seattle teen's mysterious death, bringing "The Killing" to life.

American TV viewers consume murders without hesitation in weekly procedural crime dramas like the "CSI" and "Law & Order" franchises. But even on the rare occasions when those shows tell stories involving a child's death, they're almost never as raw, palpable and grim as "The Killing," an engrossing, well-made drama series that viewers should embrace despite its tough subject matter.
