Search will resume Monday for 3-year-old who fell into Weber River

OGDEN — The Weber County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue dive team was well-prepared Saturday when they got a call early that evening to look for a 3-year-old in the Weber River.

According to the latest search and rescue newsletter, they had met just that morning to prepare their dive trailer for the 2012 season.

Utah sees hottest April temperatures since the 1930s

OGDEN — The temperature over the weekend reached a high not felt in the state since the mid-1930s.

National Weather Service meteorologist Nanette Hosenfeld said the state is seeing temperatures running 15 to 20 degrees above the average for this time of year.

Sunday broke 17 records, with temperatures reaching 86 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 83 degrees.

Utah's spring fires have been 'unusual,' experts say

OGDEN — Top of Utah fire officials are asking residents to take extreme caution this spring if they plan to do any controlled burns.

“We’ve had unusual fire behavior this spring,” said Weber Fire District Marshal Ted Black.

That unusual fire behavior is the result of three to four years of wet weather and now a dry winter, leaving lots of dead vegetation.

Top of Utah 'dodged a bullet' during Friday's snowy commute

Law enforcement seemed pleasantly surprised that the snowy commute wasn’t worse Friday morning.

A storm dropped a few inches of snow in the Top of Utah on Friday, with the highest amount of 6 inches on the Bountiful benches, according to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.

As a result, Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to seven crashes in Davis County between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., said Cpl. Chad McWilliams.

Statewide crop outlook is positive for 2012

HOOPER — Rulon Fowers, a hay farmer in Hooper, is hopeful for the next year.

Statewide, farmers intend to plant more acres of barley, wheat and hay than they did last year, and sow just as much corn and oat seeds, according to a report released Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The most significant increase is in the amount of barley that farmers intend to plant, which the USDA reported as up 14 percent.

Low runoffs unlikely to lead to watering restrictions - this year, at least

OGDEN — Despite recent storms, the snowpack above the Wasatch Front is still well below average, meaning runoffs will also be low.

That does not mean there will be watering or irrigation restrictions this summer, however.

“We’ve talked a lot about it,” said Weber Basin Water Conservancy District Director Tage Flint. “It looks as if the runoff projections show we’re going to settle in about 70 percent of normal.”

Snowmobiler escapes slide; more dangerous conditions await

MONTE CRISTO — A snowmobiler caught in an avalanche Friday, at the start of what forecasters expect to be a dangerous weekend, escaped with just an injured leg.

Though avalanches caused by skiers, snowboarders or snowmobilers have been sparse in Northern Utah, high winds and heavy snow settling on top of weak snow this week led to a slide.

The unidentified man was with three other snowmobilers on Whiskey Hill, just outside of the Monte Cristo trailhead on Highway 39, when he triggered an avalanche halfway up a steep slope around 11 a.m., said Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center.

Experts: Exercise caution on Utah's slopes

OGDEN -- As Utah ski resorts anticipate the arrival of the big storm they've been desperately waiting for, experts want to remind eager snow junkies -- especially those who plan to venture into the backcountry -- to be extra careful.

After an unusually dry start to winter, as much as a foot and a half of fresh powder is expected to blanket Northern Utah's mountains over the next several days.

While that's good news for the ski industry, it also dramatically increases the risk of avalanches, which account for nearly two-thirds of natural hazard-related deaths in the state.
