Thibodeau says Rose ‘not quite’ ready to play

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Injured Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose is “not quite” ready to return from his knee injury, coach Tom Thibodeau said Friday.

The former MVP point guard continues to practice without restrictions, but his return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee remains up in the air.

“We’ll see when he’s ready,” Thibodeau said. “He’s getting there. He’s not quite there yet.”

ESPNChicago.com reported Friday that Rose’s doctor has cleared him to play, but he has told the team he won’t until he can dunk with confidence off his left foot. Thibodeau said a decision “hasn’t been finalized yet.”

MILWAUKEE — After scoring just nine points in regulation, J.J. Redick nearly matched that total in overtime Monday night.

Redick, acquired by the Milwaukee Bucks at last month’s trade deadline, scored his new team’s first eight points in the extra period. He finished with 17 as the Bucks beat the Utah Jazz 109-108.

The NBA’s stats mania

This weekend, many of the NBA’s sharpest minds will gather at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, an increasingly splashy affair held each year by MIT, and now sponsored by ESPN. They’ve come a long way. Just over a decade ago, several of the most prominent among them first gathered in a much humbler spot: a Yahoo Groups message board called “APBR Analysis,” for the Association of Professional Basketball Researchers.

What happened and what didn’t on NBA deadline day

The NBA’s trade deadline came and went Thursday without a season-changing deal. In question-and-answer form, here’s a look at what happened:

Q: SO, THE TRADE DEADLINE HIT THURSDAY AFTERNOON. THERE WAS A LOT OF ACTION, RIGHT?

A: No, except for NBA fans frantically hitting refresh on their Twitter feeds in hopes of seeing something interesting. There were nine deals, but the day was more about what didn’t happen than what did. Josh Smith is staying in Atlanta, Utah is keeping both Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, and J.J. Redick was the biggest name that was moved, going from Orlando to Milwaukee.

Kirilenko taking time off from Russia team

MOSCOW — Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrei Kirilenko is taking time off from the Russian national team for family reasons, according to media reports in Russia.

The 32-year-old Kirilenko told the daily Sport-Express that he had informed the Russian basketball federation president, Alexander Krasnenkov, of his decision by phone.

Jazz use caution and restraint, make no trades

SALT LAKE CITY — As the NBA’s trade deadline came and went Thursday, the Utah Jazz decided youth, financial flexibility and the ability to control their own fate was their most valuable asset.
