New Year's goal to be fit? Resolve to revamp goals

OGDEN -- If this New Year finds you promising yourself, yet again, that you'll adopt a strenuous gym routine that will leave you as buff as a fitness model, you may need a resolution revamp to get it done.

Joan Thompson, an associate professor of Health Promotion and Human Performance at Weber State University, said following certain steps can help anyone enjoy a happier, fitter 2012.

EPIC FAIL: Some teenagers' New Year's resolutions quickly fall by the wayside

The New Year's Resolution. It can come in many forms: scribbled down on the page of a notebook, published via a Facebook status update, frustratingly vented out to a friend in mid-December, or just a measly declaration that "Next year, I'll ... (fill in the blank)".

I started writing this story the day before its deadline.

As one of my many 2010 New Year's resolutions was to stop procrastinating once and for all, this is an example of one of many "Epic Fails" that teens came across this year regarding their New Year's resolutions.

McFadden rocks in new year

OGDEN -- Save a little dancing from New Year's Eve. As 2011 launches, Eric McFadden brings his high-energy rock show to town. He plays at 9 p.m. Saturday at Brewskis, 344 Historic 25th St.

The venue is for those age 21 and over.

The Albuquerque, N.M.-raised guitarist/singer/songwriter has built a following with his imaginative playing that mixes jazz techniques with border music and electric blues. He has a new CD, "Tribute Vol. 1: Pull a Rabbit Out of His Hat," out on Bad Reputation records.

He also appears on a new release by Stockholm Syndrome, a supergroup that also includes David Schools and Jerry Joseph, arriving in February.

Tickets are $4 at the door. For further details, call the club at 801-394-1713.

AAA offers free New Year's tows to prevent DUIs

SALT LAKE CITY -- AAA will offer its Tipsy Tow service to drinking drivers from 6 p.m. New Year's Eve until 6 a.m. New Year's Day in Utah.

Drivers, potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders and restaurant managers who may have been drinking can call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a free tow home of up to 10 miles.

SIDS rate spikes 33 percent for New Year's Day, study says

The number of babies who die of sudden infant death syndrome increases by 33 percent on New Year's Day, according to researchers who blame the increase on alcohol consumption by caregivers.
