FARMINGTON -- The Davis County Commission on Tuesday approved a $5,180,000 bid from Wadman Corp., based out of Ogden, to build a new health department building in Clearfield.
The county received 19 bids a week ago.
Davis County Health Department Director Lewis Garrett said he hopes to break ground on the building by the middle of October.
"We need to get it going, especially the foundation, before winter sets in," he said.
The health department plans to move all of its programs -- currently housed in four buildings around the county -- into the three-story building.
Those programs include Midtown Community Health Clinic; Women, Infants and Children Clinic; the vital records office; food-handler permit testing; epidemiology office; senior services; and administration.
The county health department also plans to move its Tri-County Weatherization program to the Freeport Center in Clearfield, two miles from the new health building.
Currently, Garrett said, administrative offices are in Farmington, where equipment is kept in several storage units.
Federal stimulus funds have increased the weatherization program fourfold, Garrett said.
The county's crews install insulation, repair heating systems and replace windows or do other energy-efficiency improvements for low-income residents in Weber, Davis and Morgan counties.
The state has also asked the county to provide training for other weatherization programs; therefore, it needs space for classrooms.
The Freeport Center has an 8,000-square-foot warehouse that is able to house the program.
Ten bids, ranging from $289,900 to $338,970, were submitted to the county on Tuesday to remodel the warehouse for the program. The offers came from as far away as Cedar City, with several local construction companies submitting bids.
Commissioners will announce the winning bid in an upcoming meeting.
