Teacher on paid leave / Layton police investigate situation involving 62-year-old and recent grad

LAYTON -- The 62-year-old choral director for Layton High School has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into accusations he had an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

Chris Williams, spokesman for Davis School District, confirmed Joseph Everton's paid leave status.

"One of the factors in putting the teacher on paid leave was ... Is it detrimental to the situation -- is it detrimental to the school, to the students, to the individual?" Williams said.

"When we make that determination, it removes them from the situation."

Lt. Quinn Moyes, spokesman for the Layton Police Department, confirmed the female, a former Layton High student, graduated in spring 2009, is currently 18 years old and is a Layton resident.

However, Moyes said he could not release the name of the woman while the investigation is ongoing.

"We don't release names of juveniles, and we are looking at possible criminal activity when she was 17 years old," Moyes said.

A complaint made by a community member that the teacher and former student were getting married touched off investigations by the school district and the police.

Moyes said details surrounding the investigation -- including whether an arrest is anticipated -- could not be released at this time.

"The investigation is still active and progressing," Moyes said. "I anticipate that by the end of the week the investigation will be concluded."

Moyes added that the police department had not made a recommendation to Davis School District administrators concerning Everton's employment status at Layton High School.

"That came strictly from the school district."
