MANTUA - Brigham City police arrested Daniel Cruz on suspicion he burglarized a home, tied up a teenage girl in the process and led them on a high-speed chase.
A couple and two of their children left their home near 100 S. Meadow Road in Mantua to go for a walk about 1:45 p.m. Saturday. A man, armed with a gun, broke into the home through the back door a few minutes later to find the family's 14-year-old daughter still there. Police believe he forced the girl to lay on a bed and tied her up with zip ties.
"He points the gun at her and tells her he won't kill her if she tells him where the money is," said Mantua Police Sgt. Mike Johnson.
The family returned home a few minutes later to find the man in their house. He pointed his gun at them and fled in the family's car, Johnson said. The suspect did not take any money, but he did take some jewelry, he said.
The family called 9-1-1 and the Mantua officers responding to the burglary alerted Brigham City police about the fleeing suspect.
Brigham City police chased him for a short distance from the mouth of Sardine Canyon to Brigham City. He was driving as fast as 100 miles per hour. When the suspect neared the city, he abandoned the car and continued on foot, Johnson said. He also threw away his gun away into a garbage can.
They quickly caught him and recovered the .380 automatic pistol.
Police booked Cruz into Box Elder County Jail.
