Red Canyon visitor center upgrade

TROPIC — Federal agencies are allocating more than $400,000 to upgrade a visitor center and trails around it in southern Utah’s scenic Red Canyon area.

Dixie National Forest Supervisor Rob MacWhorter says the Utah Scenic Byway 12 All American Road Committee is getting a grant of more than $325,000 from the Federal Highway Administration, and the Dixie National Forest has committed more than $81,000 in matching funds.

Work is expected to be done in 2013 at the center in the hamlet of Tropic. It’s expected to include new restrooms, an Americans with Disabilities Act accessible interpretive trail, picnic area and landscaping.

The center opened in 2002.
