Agent: Top pick Lotulelei signs with Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The agent for first-round draft pick Star Lotulelei says his client has signed a four-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Financial terms were not released. The deal includes a team option for a fifth season.

Bruce Tollner says Lotulelei, the 14th overall pick in the NFL draft, is “extremely excited to officially become a Panther.”

Rookies get first taste of NFL

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — NFL rookies are ditching their textbooks for playbooks and getting their first taste of what it’ll be like playing for paychecks instead of school pride.

Tebow Time in New York over after Jets cut QB

NEW YORK — Tebow Time is off the clock.

Tim Tebow was waived by the Jets on Monday, the end of an unsuccessful one-season experiment in New York that had been expected for months.

“Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped,” coach Rex Ryan said in a statement by the team in announcing the move.

NFL free agency: Let the spending begin

Get ready for the feeding frenzy. NFL free agency is coming.

On Tuesday, with all 32 teams under the $123 million salary cap, the checkbooks open up. Some clubs, most notably Green Bay and Pittsburgh, barely will participate, while likely letting top receivers Greg Jennings and Mike Wallace leave for huge paydays elsewhere.

That’s just their style, and building from within surely has paid off: each team has won a Super Bowl in the last five seasons.

NFL players don’t want kickoffs to get the boot

DENVER — The eight teams left in the NFL playoffs can thank their special teams for a good part of their success. That’s one reason players are still upset Commissioner Roger Goodell has floated the idea of abolishing kickoffs altogether.

Baltimore Ravens return specialist Jacoby Jones, who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season, said if the league gets rid of the electrifying plays, “I’m going to retire. I will go (ballistic). ... If they take out kickoffs, they’re going to hate me in this league.”

Source: Andy Reid, Chiefs nearing deal to be coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs should be quite familiar by now.

The two sides spent much of Thursday in negotiations for Reid to become the Chiefs’ coach, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the situation.

Utah DL Kruger seeks to join brother in NFL

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah defensive end Joe Kruger has opted not to return for his senior season and instead will enter the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound junior played in 37 of 38 games for the Utes from 2010 to 2012, with 14 starts. He led Utah with six sacks this season and had eight tackles for loss.

Eagles fire Andy Reid after 14 seasons

PHILADELPHIA — Andy Reid’s worst coaching season with the Philadelphia Eagles ended Monday after 14 years when he was fired by owner Jeffrey Lurie, who said it was time “to move in a new direction.”

Slate: NFL teams should play a man down after dirty hits

Last week, Patrick Chung (of my beloved New England Patriots) laid a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit on Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts III during the final drive of a tight game. New England took a 15-yard penalty for the dirty hit, but Shorts was done for the day. A few plays later, Chung made the interception that ended the game.

Football has its hands full with the head-injury crisis, as every week brings more lawsuits and more damaged former stars. The NFL has instituted new medical regimens to protect concussed players, and made refs crack down on the most dangerous hits. But it hasn’t considered an obvious step that would deter dirty play: a penalty box.

Football fans get a close-up in 'Silver Linings’

NEW YORK — In David O. Russell’s "Silver Linings Playbook," Bradley Cooper plays an unstable former teacher trying to improve himself after exiting a mental institution. When his character, Pat Solitano, consults his otherwise level-headed psychiatrist Dr. Cliff Patel (Anupam Kher) on whether a Philadelphia Eagles’ jersey is appropriate attire for a dinner party, Patel questions which jersey. On hearing that it’s star wide-receiver DeSean Jackson, he responds unequivocally:

"DeSean Jackson is the man."

The Skinny: It’s the rarest of battles in the NFL -- quarterbacks with two Super Bowl rings facing off. Ben Roethlisberger, the third-down master vs. Eli Manning, the fourth-quarter wizard.

Cold facts of NFL: coaches icing kickers

Andy Reid stood in the middle of the Eagles’ locker room after his team barely survived against the New York Giants last weekend, and apologized.

"I owe you one," he said with a smile.

Colts fan’s dying wish: Tickets to Sunday’s game

INDIANAPOLIS — A terminally ill Indianapolis Colts fan will get a final wish Sunday when he attends the team’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Replacement officials taking heat

One official was pulled from duty because he’s a fan. Another negated a touchdown without ever throwing a penalty flag. Several others had difficulty with basic rules.

Upon further review, the NFL’s replacement officials came up short in Week 2.
