NFL draft preview: centers

This is a weak group of centers, and it would be really weak if not for the Big Ten, which might have the top three taken. It is possible as few as seven will be drafted, though need likely will force some teams to pick players who might not have draftable grades.

Offensive tackles in high demand

As many as five offensive tackles could be chosen in the first round, which might say more about the NFL's desperation for blockers than it says about the quality of talent in the draft because the depth drops off considerably with the group likely to be overdrafted.

Ryan Leaf's addiction is no laughing matter

Although he's become a laughingstock and a punch line for misguided sports fans and unsympathetic media pundits, there's nothing even remotely funny about Ryan Leaf.

Sad, yes.

Funny, no.

49ers, led by Alex Smith, join search for missing California teen

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sierra LaMar hasn't been seen since 6 a.m. March 16, about an hour before she left her home in Morgan Hill to go to school. Police believe she was abducted as she walked to the bus stop.

Despite a legion of volunteer searchers, a well-organized campaign to find the girl and a flood of media coverage, a significant segment of Northern California hadn't heard about the missing 15-year-old until March 3

Drafting quarterback first no longer seems risky to NFL

SAN FRANCISCO -- If the NFL draft goes as expected in two weeks, quarterbacks will go in the No. 1 and No. 2 slots for the first time in 13 years. Both teams, Indianapolis and Washington, staked a lot on the belief that they can transform those picks into franchise players. The Colts released Peyton Manning, who defined their club for 14 years, and Washington traded three first-round picks and a second-rounder, to move to No. 2 and a shot at exiting quarterback purgatory.

Ex-NFL players find aptitude for apps that help others

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- The doctor's words were chilling. Even if Joe Tafoya subconsciously knew the post-surgery verdict on his injured foot, his athlete's heart was ready to fight against it.

Panthers WR Smith agrees to 3-year extension

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Panthers’ wide receiver Steve Smith expects to finish his career where it began — just like he predicted 11 years ago.

Smith, the former Utah Ute who turns 33 in May, signed a contract extension Tuesday that will likely keep him in Carolina at least through 2015 and likely for the remainder of his career.

Packers seeking a Super defense again through NFL draft

There's a reason the Green Bay Packers have been pursuing defensive linemen as if they are a desperate team.

Because they are desperate.

Except it's not the ordinary desperation you see when a team devoid of talent seeks to fill major holes in its lineup with whatever material it can find.

The Packers are looking for competition among their ranks.

Bounty scandal exacts price

GREEN BAY. Wis. -- Gregg Williams put a bull's-eye on players. There's no sugarcoating this. The defensive coordinator paid his players for knockouts, for cart-offs, for injuring the opposition. His cowboy, malicious actions may go down as one of pro football's darkest secrets ever.

NFL unveils new uniforms for all 32 teams

NEW YORK  -- Going for a slightly sleeker look, the NFL has unveiled its new uniforms designed by Nike.

Steve Kelley: Leaf's story takes a dangerous turn

SEATTLE -- When we talked almost two years ago, Ryan Leaf had been sober for 18 months and he seemed as relaxed and happy and prepared for the rest of his life as a man who had fought so many demons could be.

Peyton Manning talks tough decisions with youth

HOBBS, N.M. -- For Peyton Manning, it's all about decision-making -- from his decision to finish his senior year at Tennessee to the hundreds of split-second decisions he makes on the field as an NFL quarterback.

Manning visited Hobbs on Thursday to talk with more than 500 students during a lecture at the University of the Southwest.

One of his most important decisions came this past season, when he was faced with where to set up life after a 14-year career with Indianapolis.

Cook: Keeping fans in stands is a big challenge for NFL

Everyone knows the No. 1 challenge facing the NFL is concussions and the long-term health problems they cause players. The lawsuits -- one after another -- from former players accusing the league of doing little or nothing to make the game safer are just starting. Millions of dollars could be at stake for the owners. That's why commissioner Roger Goodell came down so hard this month on the New Orleans Saints for putting bounties on opposing players. That's why he has been so tough with the Steelers' James Harrison for what the league perceived as cheap-shot hits. Goodell wants everyone to think he cares deeply about player safety. Actually, he cares more about the owners' long-term financial wellbeing.

But there is another major threat to the NFL. It is so significant that Goodell and the owners spent 90 minutes talking about it at their meetings this week in Palm Beach, Fla.
