Female kicker set for NFL regional combine tryout

Lauren Silberman has scant chance at making the NFL.

Silberman never kicked anything more than a soccer ball in an organized game and she just started practicing long-range field goals.

Even so, the first female kicker scheduled to try out at an NFL regional scouting combine would like to see where her new hobby will take her. In an era where Danica Patrick can contend against men in motor sports, Silberman is about to take a big kick forward for female athletes, even if the odds are clearly stacked against her. The 28-year-old Silberman will kick Sunday at the New York Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, N.J.

49ers to send Smith to Kansas City

SAN FRANCISCO — Alex Smith quietly stayed behind the scenes after losing his job and watched from the sideline as San Francisco returned to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years. Yet the No. 1 overall draft pick from 2005 did make one thing known: The veteran quarterback still considers himself a starter.

Alex Smith is headed to Kansas City, the first major acquisition by the Chiefs since Andy Reid took over as coach.

A person with knowledge of the trade told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Chiefs have agreed to deal for the 2005 top overall draft pick who lost his starting quarterback job in San Francisco to Colin Kaepernick last season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade does not become official until March 12, when the NFL’s new business year begins.

49ers might trade Alex Smith to Chiefs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Alex Smith appears closer to leaving the 49ers next month after reports this past week linked him to the spot where many former San Francisco quarterbacks seem to end up -- Kansas City.

League sources said Monday the 49ers are not locked into a deal but that team officials have told others at the scouting combine in Indianapolis they are confident a trade will be made and they plan to have 15 picks in the April draft.

They have 11 selections with three more expected next month as compensation for losing free agents a year ago. The 15th pick ostensibly would come in a deal for Smith.

Lotulelei, top NFL draft prospect from Utah, has heart ailment

INDIANAPOLIS — Top draft prospect Star Lotulelei will undergo more extensive heart tests when he returns to Utah.

Doctors at the NFL’s annual scouting combine in Indianapolis found the star defensive tackle and likely high pick has a heart condition, Lotulelei’s agent, Bruce Tollner, confirmed in a series of emails with The Associated Press on Monday.

Te’o doing tough balancing act at NFL combine

INDIANAPOLIS — Manti Te’o walked into a crowded room of reporters Saturday, took a breath and settled in for 15 minutes of NFL scouting combine history.

Again, the former Notre Dame linebacker explained how he had been duped in the Internet romance he had with a girlfriend he never met, and again, he tried to turn the page on an embarrassing chapter by talking football. This time, he even got to see it play out on live television 12 yards away — where three muted flat-screen monitors were in direct view of Te’o.

Answers could have big impact on NFL draft stock

INDIANAPOLIS — Barkevious Mingo is ready for questions he will face this weekend in Indianapolis.

Seemingly every NFL team at the annual scouting combine will ask about his relationship with former college teammate Tyrann Mathieu and whether he ever hung out with the troubled cornerback.

Colts make it official: Collie, Freeney won’t be back

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts said Friday they will not re-sign former league sacks champion Dwight Freeney or oft-injured receiver Austin Collie.

Both will become unrestricted free agents next month.

Super Bowl XLVII: Defeat doesn’t dim 49ers’ bright future

NEW ORLEANS — The San Francisco 49ers careened off Bourbon Street on Sunday, took a wrong turn and wound up at Heartbreak Hotel.

The Big Easy came down hard on the boys from the bay.

Ravens 34, 49ers 31.

Parcells, Sapp, Carter among 7 Hall inductees

NEW ORLEANS — Coach Bill Parcells, Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The class of 2013 also includes a pair of senior selections, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson. The announcement was made Saturday in New Orleans, a day before the Super Bowl.

Happy feet: Former Ute Steve Smith hosts fundraiser

You may not have received an invite — neither did I — but NFL Pro Bowler and former Ute receiver Steve Smith hosted a “Kick Off Your Shoes” fundraiser benefiting Samaritan’s Feet on Wednesday in New Orleans as part of Super Bowl XLVII festivities. The dinner took place in New Orleans, at chef John Besh’s restaurant AUGUST.

Hogle Zoo orangutan picks Ravens in The Big Game

SALT LAKE CITY — Elijah the Orangutan, Hogle Zoo’s popular prognosticator, predicts the Baltimore Ravens will win Sunday’s Super Bowl.

This will be his sixth prediction. Zoo officials say he is 5-0 with his Primate Pick.

Column: Painful losses endure for Kaepernicks

NEW ORLEANS — Lance Kaepernick was 23 days old when he died.

He seemed normal when his parents brought him home. Then everything, suddenly, went tragically wrong. Two open heart surgeries couldn’t save the tiny baby Rick and Teresa Kaepernick had so joyfully welcomed into their lives.

Their next son never made it out of the hospital. Kent Kaepernick was 4 days old when he died, also of a heart defect.

“You’re 25, 26 and you have two sons buried,” Rick Kaepernick said. “You grow up in a hurry.”

Adver-teasers: Super Bowl viewers get peek at ads

NEW YORK — Super Bowl advertisers are learning the art of the tease.

Supermodel Kate Upton appears in an online Mercedes-Benz video in a low-cut top. An unknown man wakes up with his face covered in smeared lipstick and his hands bound in furry handcuffs in a Gildan Activewear clip. And “30 Rock” star Tracy Morgan seemingly curses in a spot for Kraft’s Mio flavored drops.

“Hey, can you say (bleep) on TV?” he asks in the spot titled “Bleep.”
