North Ogden Elementary

Mark Moulton helps student Hunter Simmons read at Horace Mann Elementary School in Ogden recently. Moulton, the father of a child at the school, is one of several fathers who volunteer at the school as part of the Watch D.O.G.S. program. School officials like the program because it gives children a positive male role model, and it is improving students' behavior and grades. (MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner)

Men real cool D.O.G.S. at Ogden school

OGDEN — Walking the beat in the halls of Horace Mann Elementary School is a new breed of Watch D.O.G.S., keeping the peace.

That breed would be human. About 40 men have joined the school’s new program as D.O.G.S., which stands for Dads of Great Students.

(NICHOLAS DRANEY/Standard-Examiner) North Ogden Elementary School is in North Ogden Park, just a stone’s throw away from the original building. School had to remain in session during construction, so the city “loaned” the new school’s space to the district. The district then razed the old building, and now the city uses that space for a park and parking space for residents.

New school features fountain of youth -- and memories

NORTH OGDEN -- It has been two years since Weber School District opened the doors of the new North Ogden Elementary School, and the community partnership that got the project started continues today.

Top of Utah students question -- then get to work for science fair

OGDEN -- Ashley Wood, a sixth-grader, suspected men might be more observant of their surroundings than women are.

Sixth-grader Preston Smith grew up hearing about the time his father's house burned down and wondered if some woods are more flammable than others.

And eighth-grader Hunter James wondered if heating or freezing paintballs could enhance his accuracy when shooting his uncles during family paintball battles.

All three students got their answers by doing experiments good enough to qualify for the Ritchey Science & Engineering Fair of Utah.
