Latino students learn leadership by tutoring young children

CLEARFIELD — As 8-year-old Lyliahna Enriquez worked on her second-grade classwork Wednesday morning at Hill Field Elementary School, she knew that any questions she had could be answered by 17-year-old Christian Jimenez, who was right by her side.

Jimenez is part of Latinos in Action, a class from Northridge High School that visits the elementary school twice a week to tutor the younger students in literacy and math.

Students put physics – and duct tape – to use in 15th annual cardboard regatta

WILLARD BAY — The lighted patio torches and the skull and crossbones on the stern of the cardboard boat were creative touches.

But it was the pre-calculus that Northridge High School students Kate Davis and Tyson Young used to figure out angles and weight distribution that had their “pirate ship” vessel posting a respectable 2-minute, 8-second time to the buoy and back.

“The flames added to its awesomeness,” Davis said of the lighted torches.

Prep baseball: Roy beats Bonneville to keep playoff hopes alive

ROY -- Better late than never.

That's the first thing Roy baseball coach Eric Jones said after his squad defeated Bonneville 8-6 Friday, keeping the Royals' state 4-A playoff hopes alive.

"We are in a must-win mentality right now, but win-loss records go out the window when you are playing your rival," Jones said. "It always feels good to beat those guys (Bonneville)."

Northridge football player honored

Northridge High football player Dallas Clark recently earned the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Scholar/Leader/Athlete honor for 2012.

The Utah Chapter honored 10 student-athletes statewide, choosing from a pool of 44 nominees.

Seniors from rival high schools warn about dangers of underage drinking

LAYTON — Two seniors from rival high schools are part of a group that wants parents to learn more about the dangers of underage drinking.

Parker Pratt, of Layton High School, and Hayle Tomney, of Northridge High School, both 18, are members of Layton Communities That Care, a program sponsored by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Pratt and Tomney also serve on Layton’s Youth Court.

Both learned in November through the CTC program that a significant number of teenagers attending Layton schools are using alcohol.

High school culinary students get first-hand look at profession

SOUTH OGDEN -- Jordan Townsend used a long steel paddle to slide students' pizzas into the brick pizza oven, heated with red oak to more than 500 degrees.

Two or three minutes later, Townsend used a different paddle to draw out the golden disks, topped with fresh ground tomatoes, bubbling cheese, and sprinklings of olives, roasted vegetables, meats and cheeses.

Fremont prevails 10-6 over Syracuse
