WASHINGTON — A divided Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday allowed the Obama administration to continue plans to close the controversial Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump in Nevada.

The back and forth over Yucca Mountain as nuclear waste storage site

Depending on who you talk to, a new federal report on nuclear waste disposal either offers a start at dealing with a growing problem or merely kicks the can down the road on the controversial issue of Yucca Mountain.

The Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future wasn't specifically asked to decide the viability of a permanent nuclear waste repository in remote Yucca Mountain, Nev. But its avoidance of the issue in a 90-plus-page report submitted to the secretary of energy Friday has left some critics calling the whole effort a cop-out.

Nuke waste nears approval

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah regulators expect to have a decision within a month on whether to allow the storage of a mix of high- and low-level nuclear waste at a disposal site 30 miles west of Salt Lake City.

Although studies have not been completed, Division of Radiation Control director Rusty Lundberg said it appears likely the blended waste will not exceed permitted levels of radioactivity. But the waste would have higher levels than what is currently stored at the EnergySolutions facility in Clive, Utah.

A photographer captures the radiation tag on a 399 foot-long trailer assembly which will haul the retired steam generator component from The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Onofre, Calif. on July 26, 2011. A massive 192-wheel trailer will make four trips this year to haul old steam generator parts from the California nuclear power plant to Utah for disposal. The Orange County Register reported Wednesday that the effort to take the four 380-ton parts from Southern California Edison's San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to Clive, Utah, will begin in the next week. House leaders seek political points in Yucca fight

LAS VEGAS -- Yucca Mountain is a wild expanse of desert brush and red mountains 100 miles outside of Las Vegas where deer, coyote and antelope roam isolated fields and human visitors must pass background checks before they are allowed past heavily guarded fences.

Republicans claim this stark landscape is the nation's best hope for a national nuclear waste dump.

But with Democrats running the White House and Senate, the Yucca Mountain nuclear site has been shuttered with no chance of reopening.

Energy plan touts nuclear power in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY -- Nuclear power must be an important part of Utah's future energy portfolio, Gov. Gary Herbert said Friday as he unveiled a 10-year plan that emphasizes the need for nuclear energy alongside traditional fossil fuels and renewable sources.

EnergySolutions finds accepted nuke waste violated rules

SALT LAKE CITY  -- A Utah company is promising to tighten nuclear materials handling rules after discovering it took in waste with radioactivity levels higher than allowed.

Healthy Environment Alliance Utah chief Christopher Thomas says the state shouldn't let Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions Inc. off the hook.

Calif. recyclers find foreign market for toxic trash

In the soft morning light, the silver-gray mountain of electronic trash did not look especially hazardous. But it was.

Amid the printers and keyboards, fax machines and coffee makers was enough lead, cadmium and other toxic material to poison California watersheds for centuries.

"This is the problem," said Jim Taggart, president of ECS Refining in Santa Clara, Calif., where the e-waste was waiting to be safely recycled. "This is the material that most people are exporting. They'll get paid five to 10 cents a pound for shoving it in a container and shipping it overseas."

Five years after California launched an ambitious effort to control pollution from electronic waste, much of its e-waste is being shipped overseas, where it is contributing to a legacy of pollution and disease, a Sacramento Bee investigation has found.

EnergySolutions wants to burn German nuke waste in Tenn.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Utah firm is seeking permission to burn radioactive waste from Germany at its incinerator in Oak Ridge.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is accepting comments on the request by EnergySolutions to burn 1,000 tons of German radioactive waste at Oak Ridge and return the ash and leftovers to Germany for disposal.

NRC spokesman David McIntyre said Tuesday the request was posted Nov. 30. He said the NRC allows 30 days for comments and any request for a hearing.

McIntyre said the company has incinerated foreign waste, including shipments from Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

A federal court ruling has blocked disposal of the foreign waste in Utah.

EnergySolutions spokesman Mark Walker told The Tennessean in Nashville that whatever remains after processing must be returned to the originating country.

Court rules compact can block waste

SALT LAKE CITY -- A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that an interstate compact can block EnergySolutions Inc. from disposing of low-level radioactive waste from foreign countries in Utah's west desert.

Compact can keep foreign nuke waste out of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY -- A federal appeals court has ruled that an interstate compact can block EnergySolutions Inc. from disposing of low-level radioactive waste from foreign countries in Utah's west desert.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver ruled Tuesday that a compact on low-level radioactive waste that Utah belongs to has the authority to regulate the private facility.

NRC ruling leaves nuke waste rules to state; URCB chairman: 'Utah ... doing what's best for Utah'

SALT LAKE CITY -- Federal regulators have put off a decision on whether blended radioactive waste can be buried in Utah.

No foreign waste to come here

SALT LAKE CITY -- EnergySolutions Inc. said Wednesday it is abandoning its plans to dispose of nuclear waste from Italy in Utah's west desert and instead will try to help open a disposal facility in that country.
