Chain restaurants don't meet U.S. nutrition guidelines

Plenty of restaurants have been advertising their efforts to offer healthful choices, and it's possible to eat carefully just about anywhere. But researchers say nearly all the entrees they reviewed at 245 U.S. chains fail to meet federal guidelines.

HOW TO: Pick your toddler's first 'finger foods';

Toddlers just learning how to chew and feed themselves can still handle a variety of healthy foods. "You want to instill a good appetite for these foods right away," says Chloe Devening, a registered dietitian in Glen Allen, Va.

Some of her ideas:

Serve small bites. Food should be pea-sized or smaller to prevent choking. Cut up rounded items such as grapes and melon balls, grate firm foods such as apples and don't give anything hard (candy, nuts, popcorn) or sticky (marshmallows, gummy candy).

HOW TO: Feed your growing teenagers

A good diet is crucial during adolescence because "it's a time of such rapid growth and development," says Casey Beeghly, a registered dietitian with Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Va.

Some tips:

Explain nutrition on their terms. Teens might not care that unhealthy eating could contribute to problems such as high blood pressure or brittle bones years later. They do care about having clear skin, thick hair, a good body weight and more energy and brainpower.

Research continues to show that many adolescents have poor eating habits and decreased physical activity. To help, the Davis County Health Department is offering two free workshop series called BodyWorks to help parents and caregivers teach youngsters how to eat right and exercise, habits that will last a lifetime, says Dr. Jonelle Rowe, senior medical adviser for adolescent women’s health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This Standard-Examiner file photo from 2000 shows youngsters doing leg lift exercises at a Lady Fitness class in Layton.

Nitrates bad? That might be baloney!

There are some good reasons to give up deli meat, but the nitrates added to increase its shelf life may not be one of them.

In the 1970s, nitrates were linked to cancer, but recent studies do not show a link, said Rebecca Richards, registered dietitian and nutrition instructor at Weber State University and Stevens Henager College in Ogden.

Some cereal no healthier than Twinkies

If you're feeding your kids Honey Smacks or Apple Jacks for breakfast you might as well just give them a chocolate chip cookie or Twinkie, according to results from a nutritional analysis of kids' cereals.

The Environmental Working Group analyzed 84 cereals and found many contain as much or more sugar than many desserts. The worst culprit was Kellogg's Honey Smacks. A one-cup serving packs 20 grams of sugar, more than a Hostess Twinkie, which has 18 grams of sugar. Post Golden Crisps and General Mills Wheaties Fuel also have more sugar than a Twinkie, according to the analysis.

Book deals wheat -- even whole wheat -- another blow

The last few decades have not been good for wheat.
