Don't blame restaurants for those ridiculously large portions

It may be the most silly question in the food-service industry: "Anything else I can get you?"

The ranks of obese Americans are expected to swell even further in the coming years, rising from 36 percent of the adult population today to 42 percent by 2030, experts said Monday.

Don't ignore acid reflux -- it can lead to cancer

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- James Revier, of San Jose, Calif., had no idea his heartburn was anything more than a nuisance until six years ago, when a piece of beef became logged in his esophagus and sent him to the emergency room.

The on-call internist removed the meat and suggested Revier see a gastroenterologist for the lingering redness. It's a good thing he did. Revier had developed Barrett's esophagus, a condition caused by prolonged acid reflux. Over time, it produces cellular changes which can lead to adenocarcinoma, a type of esophageal cancer.

Morgan ranked Utah's healthiest county -- again

MORGAN — For the third year in a row, Morgan County is the healthiest county in the state, according to a national report.

The County Health Rankings report, conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, compares counties in a number of categories, including healthy behavior, clinical care and social and economic factors.

Research continues to show that many adolescents have poor eating habits and decreased physical activity. To help, the Davis County Health Department is offering two free workshop series called BodyWorks to help parents and caregivers teach youngsters how to eat right and exercise, habits that will last a lifetime, says Dr. Jonelle Rowe, senior medical adviser for adolescent women’s health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This Standard-Examiner file photo from 2000 shows youngsters doing leg lift exercises at a Lady Fitness class in Layton.

Want a fitter family? BodyWorks classes might help

CLEARFIELD — The health, weight, eating behaviors, physical activity — or the lack of it — and the body image of Utah’s youths are growing concerns for Davis County Health Department officials.

In response, the department is offering two free BodyWorks program workshops.

Disney closes new exhibit after criticism for stigmatizing fat kids

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Epcot's new Habit Heroes attraction, which tackles childhood obesity, has landed in big fat trouble.

Shortly after its unofficial opening last month, the interactive exhibit was blasted by critics for stigmatizing fat kids. Now, Disney has closed the Innoventions exhibit for "retooling."

Obesity linked to joint pain

A new study that surveyed 1 million Americans shows a clear association between obesity and pain.

The study, done by Stony Brook University Medical Center in New York and published in January in an online edition of Obesity, found not only was there a clear link between pain and obesity, but also that people who were the heaviest suffered higher rates of pain.

Researchers surveyed 1,010,762 people via telephone over a two-year period, from 2008 to 2010. Height, weight and body mass index were calculated, along with detailed questions about pain.

Some fast-food patrons in study agreed to downsize meals

Most patrons of fast-food shops are regularly asked if they'd like to "value size" or increase the portions of their meal for a few cents more.

Experts say supersized meals and a "clean plate" culture largely contribute to a national obesity rate among adults greater than 33 percent.

But for a few weeks at a time in 2010, visitors to the Panda Express franchise at Duke University in Durham, N.C., were offered the option of less -- and a surprising number of people took it.

Kids have higher obesity risk if dad is fat

Kids might be at higher risk for obesity if Dad is overweight, a study suggests.

Other studies have shown an association between two overweight parents and higher weight in their children, and weight relationships between fathers and sons and mothers and daughters. Researchers in this study, published in the January issue of the International Journal of Obesity, measured the height and weight of children from 3,285 two-parent families in Australia in 2004, when the children were ages 4 and 5, and again in 2008 when they were ages 8 and 9.

Gastric bypass surgery becoming more common on less obese people

Gone are the days when weight-loss surgery was used only for the morbidly obese -- people who are at least 100 pounds over their ideal weight.

That's because even for less severely overweight people who can't keep the pounds off through conventional means, surgery can be the most effective way to banish certain serious health conditions.

Report: Utah ranks No. 7 in overall health

OGDEN -- Utah currently ranks seventh in the nation when it comes to the overall health of its residents, the same spot it held in last year's rankings.

The 22nd annual America's Health Rankings shows Utahns have a lower prevalence of smoking, binge drinking and obesity than other states. In addition, the state has a low rate of preventable hospitalizations, low rates of cancer deaths, cardiovascular deaths, infant mortality and adult diabetes.

The report shows a 10 percent drop in preventable re-hospitalizations among Medicare patients for illnesses such as pneumonia, asthma, congestive heart disease and diabetes.
