WASHINGTON TERRACE -- A pregnant Ogden woman tried to drive herself to the hospital while in labor, authorities say, but she was stopped along the way for a traffic violation.
A sheriff's deputy pulled over an SUV around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday near 147 E. 5100 South in Washington Terrace for making an illegal left turn.
When the deputy approached the vehicle, he learned the driver, Sara Starr-Smith, 28, was in labor, said Weber County Sheriff's Cpl. Mark Horton.
"She was driving herself to the hospital," Horton said. "She asked the deputy to follow her, but the deputy called for an ambulance. We don't recommend anyone drive to the hospital in that condition."
Starr-Smith was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Hospital spokesman Chris Dallin said the pregnancy was not full-term when Starr-Smith came to the hospital.
Starr-Smith had just dropped off her child at Roosevelt Elementary School and was en route to the hospital when she was pulled over for making an illegal turn out of the school parking lot.
A school resource officer deputy made the traffic stop.
Starr-Smith told hospital staff she was heading to the hospital because she was experiencing abdominal pain.
Dallin said Starr-Smith was not comfortable releasing any additional information on the incident.
Deputies originally called in a medical helicopter to transport Starr-Smith, but they later canceled the request and instead arranged to take her to the hospital by ambulance.
Weber County Sheriff's Capt. Klint Anderson said his office does not plan to file charges against Starr-Smith.
