WASHINGTON TERRACE — Authorities say a pregnant Washington Terrace woman tried to drive herself to the hospital this morning while in labor, but she was stopped along the way for a traffic violation.
A sheriff’s deputy pulled over an SUV near 147 East 5100 South for making an illegal left turn around 8:15 a.m. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he discovered the 28-year-old woman was in labor, said Weber County Sheriff’s Corp. Mark Horton.
“She was driving herself to the hospital,” Horton said. “She asked the deputy to follow her, but the deputy called for an ambulance. We don’t recommend anyone drive to the hospital in that condition.”
Authorities say the woman had just dropped off her child at Roosevelt Elementary School and was enroute to the hospital when she was pulled over for making the illegal turn out of the school parking lot. A school resource officer deputy made the traffic stop.
Deputies originally called in a medical helicopter to transport the woman, but they later cancelled the request and instead arranged to take her to the hospital by ambulance.
Weber County Sheriff’s Capt. Klint Anderson said his office does not plan to file charges against the woman.
Authorities are also not releasing the woman’s identity until they are able to investigate the incident further, Horton said.
