Stewart wants to fire his public defenders

OGDEN — Second District Judge Noel S. Hyde on Tuesday ordered a May 31 hearing to consider a request from Matthew David Stewart to fire his public defenders.

Stewart has told the court he wants to use attorneys he selects to defend him against aggravated murder charges in the Jan. 4 shootout with police that resulted in the death of one officer.

The May 31 hearing will be to question Stewart in more detail about his decision to hire private attorneys and to explore whether Stewart is indigent and qualifies for public defenders.

House fire displaces Ogden family

OGDEN — An Ogden family was displaced after a fire destroyed part of their house Friday night.

Dew Tour will not return to Snowbasin

OGDEN — The Winter Dew Tour is finished in Ogden and Utah.

Snowbasin Resort officials confirmed Monday that the popular freestyle skiing and snowboarding event will not be held at the resort in 2012.

“It’s not coming to Snowbasin next winter,” said Snowbasin spokesman Jason Dyer. “The whole tour is kind going through an evolution right now.”

The Summer Dew Tour, which has been held in Salt Lake City, also will not be returning.

Ogden residents oppose bonding for water improvements

OGDEN — Water was on fire Thursday night as city officials held a heated town hall meeting to discuss the recent water and utility rate study.

The city is considering bonding to pay for about $45 million in needed infrastructure improvements that range from replacing old pipeline to a total replacement of the city’s water treatment plant in Ogden Canyon.

Ogden residents oppose annexation for industrial use

OGDEN — The city council is reviewing a proposal to annex land near the western border of Ogden and zone the area for industrial use, but nearby residents don’t want to lose the rural feel of their neighborhood.

The council voted to review a petition filed by David Phipps for the annexation of several large undeveloped parcels at approximately 3024 Midland Drive, which is in unincorporated Weber County.

OGDEN — About 60 students who attend St. Joseph Catholic High School had to find their own transportation to classes Monday after three of the school’s buses were vandalized.

Change on Ogden’s Wall Avenue to help clear away red tape

OGDEN — An area that has long been used for industrial and manufacturing purposes is now zoned for business, a move the city says will help area businesses avoid red tape in the future.

The city council has unanimously adopted an ordinance to rezone two sections of land adjacent to Wall Avenue, changing it from a manufacturing M-1 zone to a commercial C-3 zone.

Police: Child porn found on Stewart’s computer

OGDEN -- Investigators found anti-government information and child pornography when they searched Matthew David Stewart’s computer, according to search warrant information filed in 2nd District Court.

A blue 2000 Ford Focus was northbound on I-15 MP335, just north of SR 193 (700 South) in Clearfield. It was occupied by father and son, Jorge (age 63) and Cristopher Revilla (age 29) both from Ogden, Utah.
The driver of the Ford, Jorge, lost control on the snow packed roads and went into the median. The car submarined under the cable barrier and went into southbound traffic lanes. A red 2009 Volvo tractor/trailer, was southbound and the Ford slid into the Volvo. It was a t-bone collision on the passenger side of the Ford. Both occupants were killed instantly. OGDEN — The father and son who died in a car accident Tuesday night were always together, their apartment manager said.

OGDEN — Attorney Randy Richards is not entitled to funding from Weber County to represent Matthew David Stewart, the man accused of killing an Ogden police officer and wounding five others in a Jan. 4 gun battle, a judge ruled today.

Three arrested in Pineview boating death

OGDEN — The Weber County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three people in connection with the Aug. 21, 2011, death of Pineview Reservoir swimmer Esther Fujimoto.

Colton Raines, Skyler Shepherd and Robert Cole Boyer were arrested Friday.

Fujimoto died after being struck by a boat while swimming in the reservoir.
