Ogden council votes to amend code on ‘social hall’ for live music

OGDEN — The Ogden City Council gave Ernie McKown some good news Tuesday night, but the owner of the Paris Cafe still doesn’t know when he’ll be legally allowed to feature live music at his establishment.

Stewart backers pushing Ogden council, police for information

OGDEN ­— Supporters of Matthew David Stewart are remaining active on several fronts separate from the courthouse, where the Ogden man faces the death penalty over a shootout at his home that left him and six police officers injured, one fatally.

The Ogden public safety building has since been renamed for Jared Francom, who died in the Jan. 4, 2012, forced-entry serving of a marijuana search warrant at Stewart’s home by the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force. Stewart is charged with capital homicide in Francom’s death, his trial set for spring 2014.

In the meantime, Stewart’s family and friends are lobbying the Ogden City Council on issues from the case and are gathering records of the reviews by the Weber County Attorney’s Office of all officer-involved shootings dating back to 1991.

Homeless to Ogden council after fatal auto-ped: Increase safety on Wall

OGDEN — After the death of two men on Wall Avenue near St. Anne’s Center in Ogden, the area’s homeless population hopes something will be done to make crossing the street there safer.

“The cars don’t want to stop,” Anthony Gallegos said, noting many vehicles move too fast to slow down. “They need to put a crosswalk there.”

Gallegos and a number of homeless patrons of the shelter, at 137 W. Binford St., recently discussed their difficulties trying to cross Wall Avenue.

Ideas to improve the area include a proper crosswalk, better lighting and a pedestrian bridge.

OGDEN — Depending on your point of view, backyard chickens are either a ready source of quality food or a complete nuisance — but either way you look at it, they probably won’t be allowed in Ogden any time soon.
