OGDEN -- The city council has amended an ordinance to allow indoor recreational facilities within manufacturing zones.
Earlier this month, the Ogden Planning Commission recommended that the city council change the ordinance because allowing indoor recreational facilities is consistent with the character of manufacturing zones.
Although outdoor recreation has long been allowed in manufacturing zones, indoor recreational facilities have not been permitted, said Greg Montgomery, the city's planning manager.
The city's planning staff determined indoor recreational facilities should be allowed in manufacturing zones because they pose fewer noise and dust problems than outdoor recreation facilities, as they are confined to the interior of a building, Montgomery said.
In addition, conflicts between spectators and vehicle traffic at indoor facilities are typically minimal, he said in a report to the city council. No imminent indoor recreation projects have prompted the ordinance amendment, Montgomery said.
Manufacturing zones encompass about 20 percent of the acreage within the city. Indoor recreation facilities are already allowed in commercial zones.
