OGDEN — A pair of big weekend road wins put the Ogden Mustangs two points out of first place in the Western States Hockey League Northwest Conference as they grabbed a 2-1 series win over the Boulder Bison with a 6-3, 5-4 and 1-6 showing.

Ogden now sits at 7-3-1 on the road (9-6-1-1 overall), looking forward to a division matchup with the Seattle Jr. Totems this weekend.

On Friday, Boulder took an early 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from Duncan Reeves before the Mustangs responded with a flurry of first-period scores from Dusty Watt, Kody Rodriguez and Alex Pizarro.

Ogden escaped with a win on Saturday but lost the series 2-1 with a 3-5, 4-3, 4-6 performance over the weekend.

Mustangs take series 2-1 against Spartans

OGDEN — For the second straight weekend, the Ogden Mustangs netted a 2-1 series win, this time over the Southern Oregon Spartans with a 6-3, 6-4, 2-7 effort at the Weber County Ice Sheet.

Despite Sunday’s 7-2 loss, the Mustangs (4-3-1-1) now sit in second place in the Western States Hockey League’s Pacific Division ahead of next weekend’s series in Southern Oregon against the same Spartan team.

“We got complacent,” Ogden head coach Jake Laime said of Sunday’s loss. “We came off two well-earned wins and we took them a little bit for granted and we didn’t put together a full 60 minutes. It’s a three-game series and we can’t forget about that.”

Zach O’Mara tallied four points and Christian Kraus scored three goals in the series as the Mustangs outscored the Seals 15-9 ahead of a big homestand at the Weber County Ice Sheet this weekend.

Friday proved to be a defensive battle early on as neither team scored in the first period and the Seals only logged 15 shots on the night.

Mustangs fall again, swept in weekend series

OGDEN — 144 penalty minutes on 42 infractions during a heated series with the Valencia Flyers didn’t help the Ogden Mustangs’ opening weekend as they were swept 3-2, 4-3, 5-3 at the Weber County Ice Sheet.

Sunday’s loss proved especially tough as the Mustangs carried a 3-2 lead into the third period only to watch as Valencia logged three unanswered goals to complete the sweep.

Mustangs drop first game in emotional shootout

OGDEN — If Friday’s season opener was any indication of what the Ogden Mustangs have in store this year, area hockey fans are in for six months of sore throats.

It took overtime, then penalty shots for the Mustangs and Valencia Flyers to settle the first contest of the season with Valencia narrowly escaping the Weber County Ice Sheet with a 3-2 shootout win.
