Four thieves who hit Weber cities 'trailer-dwelling doper lowlifes,' sheriff's officer says

OGDEN — Police arrested over the weekend, a group of thieves made its way through the northwest area of Weber County.

The thieves never did anything dangerous. They just tried car doors, opening the unlocked ones and snatching items from the front seat.

After following up on a warrant, Weber County sheriff’s deputies and Ogden police arrested at least four people they say were involved in the group responsible for a rash of vehicle burglaries and identity thefts Friday and Saturday.

Cops and Robbers Challenge a fun way to support families of officers in shooting

OGDEN — Damian Lira and Shane Blanch were spotted running from the police Saturday afternoon, but it was for a good cause.

The two were taking part in a fundraiser to help the families of six police officers involved in a Jan. 4 shooting in Ogden. Jared Francom was killed, and five other officers were wounded.

Judge on Matthew David Stewart case: Locked court a rarity

OGDEN — It remains to be seen if the courtroom doors will be locked at the May 14 hearing for accused cop-killer Matthew David Stewart.

The doors to 2nd District Judge Noel Hyde’s courtroom have been locked from the outside during the past two hearings for Stewart.

In each case, a Salt Lake City reporter was locked out of the hearing after arriving a bit late.

Ogden officer shoots at robbery suspect, is on paid leave

OGDEN — An Ogden police officer is on paid administrative leave after firing at a robbery suspect.

Police believe Noe Gonzalez, 20, was robbing someone who had been walking down the sidewalk on the 2200 block of Monroe Boulevard about 12:35 a.m. Thursday.

Officers arrived on the scene to see the suspect get into the passenger seat of a vehicle that took off, said Ogden Police Lt. Tony Fox.

Three Ogden Trece members arrested for violating gang injunction

OGDEN — After being stopped for a traffic offense, three Ogden Trece members have been arrested for violating a gang injunction.

The stop occurred at 12:05 a.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Washington Boulevard, said Police Lt. Scott Conley.

3-year-old run over by car in Ogden still in critical condition

OGDEN — A 3-year-old remains in critical condition at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City after he was hit by a car at a residence in the 900 East block of 1225 North around 1 p.m. Thursday, says Ogden Police Lt. Shawn Hamblin.

The Pocatello boy, who was not identified, was visiting relatives. He was playing with a child in the neighborhood when a woman in her 30s backed out of a driveway and ran over him, Hamblin said.

The name of the driver was not released. No charges have been filed.

Ogden police seek security video from neighborhood where man invaded home

OGDEN — Police are seeking security camera video from residents in a neighborhood where a woman reportedly confronted a masked gunman in her home earlier this month.

A suspect hasn’t been identified in the March 16 home invasion in the 2800 block of Harrison Boulevard, Police Lt. Scott Conley said Monday, and no other incidents involving the intruder have been reported.

Three-day prelim set for Stewart; family website gets fundraising permit

OGDEN — With a large contingent of Matthew David Stewart’s supporters looking on, a judge scheduled the first public airing of the evidence against Stewart in a fatal shootout with police.

Second District Judge Noel Hyde set Stewart’s preliminary hearing for July 18-20 on charges from the Jan. 4 gunfight that left one officer dead and five wounded.

OGDEN — Three suspects are in custody and another remains at large following a Thursday morning burglary and an ensuing police manhunt.

At 7:40 a.m., a witness observed four males removing items from a home in the area of 200 Ogden Canyon Road and placing them into a green Jeep Cherokee, said Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther.

Ogden boy, 8, takes 5-year-old sister on joyride, crashes family minivan

OGDEN — An 8-year-old boy and his 5-year-old sister got more than they bargained for early Thursday morning when they took the family’s van for a trip to a local store.

The boy was driving and crashed the van into some trees near the Ogden River around 2 a.m., said Police Lt. Danielle Croyle.

Horse put down after hit by truck on Washington Blvd.

OGDEN — A loose horse from Harrisville caused a traffic accident in Ogden just after 10 p.m. Sunday.

An 8-year-old paint mare, due to foal next month, suffered fatal injuries and was put down soon after the accident.

Matthew David Stewart faces charges in the death of a Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force agent and the wounding of five other law enforcement officials. His family has been trying to raise funds for his legal defense but must file for a permit and have it approved first.

Official explains fundraising legalities in Stewart case

OGDEN — As far as the law knows, there’s only one difference between the family of Matthew David Stewart asking for money to pay their son’s legal bills in the shooting death of a policeman and the family of a sick child asking for money to pay hospital bills: Someone complained about the Stewart family.

Other than that, all things being equal, both situations are private charities seeking public donations. Both have to follow the law.

The family had resumed raising funds for Matthew's defense but stopped after being reached by the Standard-Examiner on Monday and told that the Utah Division of Consumer Protection was looking into the issue. OGDEN — The father of Matthew David Stewart abruptly stopped renewed fundraising efforts on a website Monday night for his son’s legal defense against capital murder charges following warnings of possible fines from the state.
