Patterson testifies during Greiner's Hatch Act hearing

SALT LAKE CITY -- John Patterson, the city's chief administrative officer, testified during a federal Hatch Act hearing today that he, not Police Chief Jon Greiner, is responsible for overseeing all law enforcement grants.

Patterson said he has never spoken with Greiner regarding any state, local or federal grants. He also said all grant applications for the police department are submitted by Assistant Police Chief Wayne Tarwater.

The federal grants are at the heart of the government's contention that Greiner, who is also a State Senator, is in violation of the provisions of the Hatch Act.

Patterson also testified that he didn't recognize numerous federal grant documents from 2004, 2005 and 2006 bearing Greiner's signature shown to him by prosecutors for the U.S. Office of Special Counsel. Patterson said some grants were applied for prior to his employment with the city. Others were the responsibility of Tarwarter, he said.

Greiner is expected to testify later today.
