Dispute over Harley leads to arrest in Ogden

OGDEN — A dispute over a motorcycle led police to arrest a man wanted for a probation violation in Montana on Tuesday.

Ogden police picked up Jimmie Carl Smith, 52, riding a motorcycle that had been reported stolen in North Ogden, Lt. Chad Ledford said.

OGDEN — A man threatened to pull a gun during a confrontation at 9:46 p.m. Tuesday on the 1300 block of Kiesel Avenue. As soon as a gun was mentioned, the crowd scattered.

Argument over freshly mopped floor ends in arrest

OGDEN — An argument between co-workers regarding walking over a freshly mopped floor led to an arrest for aggravated assault.

A supervisor at Southern Food Group tackled David Wisniewski, 29, when he saw Wisniewski pull out a knife and place it by his side during an argument Tuesday afternoon, said Ogden Police Lt. Chad Ledford.

Motorcyclist critical after Monday night crash in Ogden

OGDEN — A 39-year-old man was listed in stable but critical condition Monday night following an accident involving his motorcycle and a car at the corner of 36th Street and Brinker Avenue.

Creative use of space, equipment aims to keep Ogden ahead of crime

OGDEN — When Dave Weloth started as a police officer 20 years ago, he would have liked to have had the information he’s providing today. Weloth now heads the Ogden Police Real Time Crime Center, a small room of computers in the city’s Public Safety Building.

Screens covering two walls show dispatch feeds and live surveillance feeds from public areas around the city.

The screens also feature maps marked with crime data — such as where the most burglaries have occurred and where parolees convicted of burglary are in relation to those hot spots, so officers know where to patrol and who they can talk to for information.

OGDEN — When Andrea Martersteck’s salon was burglarized Aug. 19, she knew her business could bounce back.

Police think Ogden drive-bys are tied to gang's power struggle

OGDEN — Police believe drive-by shootings at an Ogden home Tuesday night and Wednesday morning may be related to a violent power struggle within a street gang over control of leadership, drugs and money.

Ogden Police Lt. Scott Conley declined to identify the gang, but said members are not affiliated with the Ogden Trece.

On Monday, 2nd District Judge Ernie Jones issued a permanent injunction against Trece members, banning them from associating with each other in public and being in the presence of guns, drugs and alcohol. The injunction also places Treces under an 11 p.m. curfew.

Monument to nine fallen Ogden police officers dedicated

OGDEN — Under a blazing sun, family members of fallen Ogden police officers somberly unveiled a granite monument Wednesday honoring nine lawmen who died in the line of duty.

Dozens of people, including numerous law enforcement personnel in dress uniform, attended the hourlong ceremony at the Municipal Gardens, 2549 Washington Blvd.

Ogden police show off plate-recognition technology

OGDEN — After being questioned about their use of new license plate recognition technology, the Ogden Police Department put the equipment on display.

The OPD gave a demonstration to local media Wednesday on how and why they use Automated License Plate Recognition, a new technology that provides continuous and high-speed monitoring of traffic areas.

Ogden has one ALPR-fitted vehicle, which costs about $50,000 and features four cameras mounted on top of the police car, with a special computer inside. The department has had the vehicle for about one year.

Prosecutors won't seek death penalty in Ogden infant's death

OGDEN — Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for Jeremy Marshall, charged with capital homicide in the Dec. 14 death of his 3-month-old stepdaughter.

The child, Kennedy Lucille Marshall, was pronounced dead of a head injury at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City after helicopter transport from McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

OGDEN -- The Ogden Police Department is one of three state law enforcement agencies targeted by the Utah chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union with records requests seeking information about a new license plate recognition technology.
