Commission gives Ogden-Weber Tech a glowing review

OGDEN — The Commission of the Council on Occupational Education has reaffirmed Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College’s institutional accreditation for the next six years.

Ogden-Weber Tech’s administration and faculty members had worked and planned for that result. The surprise was that the C.O.E. gave no recommendations or suggestions for improvement, which is unusual.

“It is rare for an institution to come through an accreditation of this magnitude with no findings or even a hint of a suggestion,” said Collette R. Mercier, OWATC president. “This is a reflection of our people, their commitment to students, their pride in doing things the right way, and to our employer partnerships.

OWATC pioneers partnership with big-industry training website

OGDEN -- Eight years ago, instructors at Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College were looking to solve a problem in the machinist program.

"It was the training materials," said instructor Jeff Fowler, who teaches with machinist team member Bret Holmes. "The materials were amazingly outdated. The textbooks available were 30 to 40 years old, and technology changes fast. It was a big concern of mine."

So Fowler went online looking for up-to-date material, and found Tooling U (www.toolingu.com), a site that then provided technical training only for big industry.

Utahns plan big leaps for 2012

OGDEN -- When trying to improve your life, what's best, baby steps or giant leaps?

Rhonda Lauritzen, Ogden-Weber Tech vice president of student services and a popular motivational speaker at the school's Student Success Center, is a giant leap kind of woman.

"I heard about a great study five or six years ago where people who were unhealthy were told by their doctors they had to change their lifestyle or they would die," Lauritzen said. "Almost everybody was unable to stick to lifestyle changes, but one group succeeded, and it was the group that made the most dramatic changes."

Home-building program helps youths learn job skills

OGDEN -- On a frosty fall weekday morning, a dozen or so young men could see their breath as they unloaded construction equipment from the Ogden-Weber Tech truck.

They'd spend the next few hours laying bathroom tile, and fastening white baseboard around the kitchen laminate flooring they had installed to replace torn linoleum. A new lighting fixture went up, and a modest, formerly dingy apartment began to take on the glow of a small, but proud, home.
