Ogden's assistant police chief announces retirement after 30 years

OGDEN — Assistant Police Chief Marcy Korgenski will retire March 15 after 30 years with the Ogden Police Department.

Korgenski, the city’s first female assistant chief, said she has enjoyed her work in law enforcement but wants to spend more time with family and concentrate on volunteer activities in the Ogden area.

Vickie McCall is receiving the Wall of Fame award from the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce. The Wall of Fame honors those who have made major contributions to the community over time. McCall, a Realtor with Utah Executive Real Estate, started with the Ogden-Weber Chamber 35 years ago. She soon joined several committees, such as military affairs, Women in Business and legislative affairs. Lesson: Disability not a boundary

OGDEN — Mike Taylor would like people to understand a few things that are crystal clear to him:

People with disabilities need to know they can find employment if they work hard and get really good at a skill that interests them.

And employers need to know that disabled people make great employees because they love their job, they are rarely late or unfocused, and they know the value of a job, so they are loyal.

Chamber business bureau targets unemployed

OGDEN -- Business entrepreneurs and those seeking jobs might be in luck Wednesday if they visit the Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce's annual Top of Utah Business Expo. The expo is free to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Golden Spike Events Center. This year's event will also offer breakfast and an after-hours party.

The breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. and costs $10. Attendees will be treated to an hourlong seminar by "The Hired Guns," an LLC with Craig Johnson and Lannie Scopes, who will offer internal and external communications tips. They seek to build brands through improved communications to current and potential customers, as well as team members and employees.

The two will also present 15-minute vignettes at the top of each hour throughout the expo. The Western theme of the expo is centered around the presenters.

Ireland leads chamber development

OGDEN -- The Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce has hired Kevin Ireland as development director in hopes of expanding their services to the business community.

"I'm very excited," Ireland said about his job. "I've been a member and worked with the chamber for going on 20 years and to have the opportunity to work with them is very exciting."

Ireland began the job July 1. He is responsible for bringing more revenue to the chamber through sponsorships, events, grant writing and fundraisers.

Plastic more popular than cash, but smartphone payments on the way

OGDEN -- Cash is king for small businesses, but in the end, any payment will do because, after all, money is money. Haley Zenger is the owner of The Queen Bee, a book and game shop on Historic 25th Street in Ogden. About 80 percent of her business is in credit cards, and she takes checks written out for less than $50, but is glad when customers use cash.

Chamber honors businesses, educators

OGDEN -- Over 240 people joined together recently for the Ogden/Weber Chamber's Partners in Education breakfast and awards.

The annual event honors businesses that work with school in Ogden School District, Weber School District, plus charter and private schools in the area.

Chamber president Dave Hardman said Partners in Education has been going strong for 20 years and that the program is extremely successful.

"Any time you can have 200 partnerships in a community our size, it really says something," Hardman said. He has been impressed with both the large and small partnerships.
