Old West

"Sheriff's deputy" Lincoln Masuisui, 6, smiles as he rounds up “robbers.” He has lymphoma, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Weber County Sheriff's Mounted Posse teamed up to make his wish come true: They built a Wild West sheriff's playhouse in Lincoln's Farr West backyard. FARR WEST — Lincoln Masuisui wore a black cowboy hat and a deputy’s badge as he peeked his head out of the top window of his new two-story sheriff’s playhouse Monday evening.

His mother called for him to come out, so he could blow out the candles on his cake and have the crowd sing “Happy Birthday.” A grin spread across his face, puffing his tan, dimpled cheeks.

It was Lincoln’s sixth birthday, but it was much more than that. Lincoln has lymphoma, and Monday was the day his Make-A-Wish dream came true.

Other children often ask for large wishes, like a trip to Disneyland, said Make-A-Wish volunteer Dana Gibson. For Lincoln, though, there was one small thing he wanted more than anything else: a Wild West sheriff’s playhouse in his backyard.

MORGAN — Every day, J.T. Wild holsters his Colt 1873 Peacemaker pistol and saunters out to subdue the Evil Roy Gang lurking near the barn.

To put it another way, local marksman Joel LaBorde walks to his backyard shooting range for target practice.

LaBorde is a member of the Single Action Shooting Society, a shooting organization that focuses on firearms of the mid- to late-19th century. Or call it a bunch of Belvideres and Calamity Janes out to have a hawg-killin’ good time; either way, it’s true.

Guthsville Rod & Gun Club holds a Cowboy Action Shooting competition, the first of the season, where participants dress in garb from the 1880's and shoot weapons that pre-date 1900. Here, Taj Birtch aka "Stunt Girl Taj" prepares for her turn at shooting the targets during the competition, April 8, 2012. (Monica Cabrera/Allentown Morning Call/MCT)

Society devoted to Old West gunslingers

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Barley Pop Bill showed no mercy. Those outlaws were fixing to steal his beer, and he went vigilante, blasting away with his double-barreled shotgun.

Not satisfied, he drew his twin Ruger Old Army revolvers and riddled the outlaws with lead. As the smoke cleared, he smiled.

Weren't nobody in Orefield, Pa., who'd be taking that brew bucket.
