Utahns can give where they live during March 22 online fundraising effort

Nonprofits and schools are bracing for the fallout of the federal government’s budget-cutting sequestration.

But here in Utah, the light at the end of the funding tunnel may be something called Love UT Give UT.

That’s an online effort, set for March 22, when everyone in Utah will be asked to give a little that will help accomplish a lot when added all together.

Not by a local gangster, but by a user of a popular online review site, Yelp.com.

Utah bounty hunter ignites gun-owner debate over Trayvon Martin shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. — In the roiling national debate over the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, one group has been conspicuously quiet: gun owners.

The National Rifle Association has not issued a statement, despite growing criticism of its part in advocating for legislation such as Florida’s "stand your ground" law — which has come under increasing fire in the wake of the unarmed teen’s shooting by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

But online, proponents of carrying concealed weapons are participating in forums that reflect their concerns over the touchy subjects of race, gun laws and the need for facts in the most controversial shooting in recent memory.

Online attacks have become a local campaign staple

LOS ANGELES -- Even some of Richard Alarcon's campaign supporters had to concede that the website slamming the politician was cleverly done.

The site had an interactive Monopoly-style board game that drew attention to the legal troubles of the Los Angeles city councilman, who is running for state Assembly this year.

A click on the video brings up a commentary about a grand jury's 18-count felony indictment against Alarcon and his wife, stemming from the district attorney's allegations that they lied about where they lived and voted fraudulently. It does not mention that the couple have pleaded not guilty to all counts and have not yet gone to trial.

Saudi woman’s election at WSU stirs interest back home

OGDEN — When Zaynab Alshakhiss won her bid for the Weber State University student Senate, it didn’t draw much attention in Ogden, but when the news hit in Alshakhiss’ native Saudi Arabia, the media mobilized.

Over spring break, more than a dozen print and online newspapers approached Weber State representatives and Alshakhiss for the story of her groundbreaking win as the international student senator for the 2012-13 year.

Young adults turning away from Facebook

The world's most popular website started in a college dorm room, and for some users it stops there, too.

Though Facebook currently claims a tenth of the world's population in monthly users, many in its original demographic -- young adults -- have attempted, sometimes successfully, to go against the grain. Call it Facebook fatigue, social network sickness, sensory overload: It's not unusual for college-age users to call it quits.
