Today is municipal election day. Across the Top of Utah, there are a lot of interesting, sometimes contentious and presumably close contests to be decided tonight ... or maybe later if recounts are needed. From Syracuse and Ogden, to Kaysville and Layton, and to Harrisville and Riverdale, etc. there are candidates and supporters who have fought a hard electoral fight and will be very anxious tonight awaiting the returns.
The Standard-Examiner Editorial Board interviewed 14 candidates for two offices in Layton and four in Ogden. We published editorial endorsements for those races. For our readers, we offer our endorsements one more time:
• In the election for Layton mayor, we endorse incumbent Steve Curtis over candidate Bob J. Stevenson.
• In the election for two Layton City Council seats, we endorse incumbent Mike Bouwhuis and candidate Adam S. Gardiner over candidates Barry T. Flitton and Sherri Lee Tatton.
• In the election for Ogden City Council, Municipal Ward 1, we endorse candidate Neil K. Garner over incumbent Jesse Garcia.
• In the election for Ogden City Council, Municipal Ward 3, we endorse candidate Patrick A. Dean over incumbent Doug Stephens.
• In the election for Ogden City Council, At Large Seat A, we endorse candidate Susan Van Hooser over candidate Mark Hains.
• In the election for Ogden City Council, At Large Seat B, we endorse candidate Bart Blair over candidate David Phipps, who was disqualified from the election last week for failing to file campaign documents on time.
• And we recommend a yes vote for the Davis School District $250 million bond which would fund the construction of new schools and renovations of others.
There are many other election races we are keeping a close eye on. They include very competitive mayoral races in Syracuse, Kaysville and North Ogden. We wish all the candidates the best. And we appreciate these public-spirited people for their efforts to be participants in helping run things in our communities.
We’d like to see a large percentage of voters at the polls. Let’s score a victory over the political doldrums; get out and vote. And go to StandardNET tonight to get results as they are released.
