PDF version(UNEDITED) People shoud stop being mad at this poor psychiatrist and start feeling sorry for him. After spending 6 years at Walter Reed during wartime, people should realize that this guy suffered terribly from PTSD. You can't deal with that volume of shattered soldiers (quadropalegics, blind, and brain damaged) without being greatly affected. Then, when you add on a crappy evaluation and imminent combat deployment orders...things can boil order.
These wars have gone on too long, with too few military members, and with a severe shortage of mental health providers. Now...we're all paying the price by pushing our mental health providers over the edge.
So, stop hating Dr. Hasan and start caring about the mental health of ALL your military members.
P.S. It's a load of crap to hear everyone care about Veterans 1 week per year, during Veterans Day hoo-plah. Encourage the media to stop glorifying war. 25% of all Iraq & Afghanistan veterans suffer from PTSD...not very glorious is it???

Hasan has virtyually no weapons training, but counsels US soldiers in psychiactric settings on how to cope with murdering people he attends Mosque with, and gets off 100 shots in a room full of fully trained soldiers with a semi-auto pistol. Wake Up! If he had a fully auto M-4 assault rifle, fine; with a pistol BS. Harris and Kliebold kill 13, the Twin Cities bridge collapses killing 13, Hassan kills 13 and Ben Franklin publishes a Serpent encircling the 1st 13 American colonies with the slogan "Join or Die" Time to Wake Up people. you failed include these were fully trained UNARMED military personel and being unarmed and in the face of withering fire they could do little to stop Hason. An untrained person, in firearms, with two pistols, a few clips, and a group of unaware/unarmed people crowded and cornered in a room could do the same thing.

I said "obama lied 13 people died" you seem to live in your own little world where you make things up. not once did I say obama pulled the trigger. but because he didn't stop the war like he said he would Major Hason cracked up whan he got his orders to deploy and shot those people. because we are still there, beyond obama's promised deadline to get out, the war is now obama's war, the economy is now obama's, the $7 trillion debt is now obama's, etc. I've read through this four times and nothing I've said is racist so let's not play that card again.

I know of many military
I know of many military people that do not agree with either of the two wars arenas, but none would say anything out loud so they wouldn't be traitors. This man had mental problems that were not picked up. Seems that some were visible, but the military was going to force the issue regarding deployment. The Commander in Chief does not try these cases. Since I'm not a racist, I'm not recognizing anything but that there were religious issues for him that should have been dealt with during his training. For goodness sakes, many returned military people have done the same thing. Mental illness isn't printed on our forheads.

As a psychiatrist counseling boys deaded into Middle East War, is he the sort of man you think best for that role?
Take a step back and you will see that paper passports identifying Radical Muslim Arabs don't just float out of pressurized jets traveling at 500 MPH past a ragiing steel buring inferno where they are found in the debris piles at the WTC or Pentagon any more than this story can be made sense of. "Our enemies are the men of our own house". When your sons are ordered to Afghanistan or Iraq or Iran , just remember Hamid Karzai, Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden had far more to do with America than their respective countries.

He was never deployed outside the US, never seen combat, counselled army personel at Bathesda hospital. PTSD is experianced it's not contagious.

Of course it's not contagious, but just what the hell do you think years of counseling traumatized soldiers is like? Summer camp? It's quite common for counselors to high-stress occupations like soldiers and police officers to experience PTSD from their work with those patients. Among those who actually know anything about psychiatry, this is not a controversial idea.

PTSD is not "contagious," in the sense that a virus is. But counseling of people with PTSD (or victims of assault; or sexual violence; or any number of other traumas) does in itself incur some trauma on psychiatrists and therapists. This is not a controversial idea among those professions, though it's understandably hard to grasp for the argumentatively obtuse.
Now before you go off saying I'm sympathetic to the shooter, I'll note that I'm not and I think the original letter is far too strong in its argument (except where the author argues that we should be acutely concerned for the mental health of our military). I think it's quite likely that he has PTSD, but that PTSD is no moral get-out-jail-free card.
I Can't Believe My Eyes/Ears
I spent 30 years in the military and can tell you, no military person likes or wants war. How can you feel sorry- -This man is a coward and a traitor. He challenged his country’s position on an enemy during war time, speaking out in a way that would get any enlisted man or woman courts marshaled or at a minimum a general discharge. Then he turned against his own troops, those he was given authority over by virtue of his rank and, while yelling the battle cry of the enemy, he mowed them down in cold blood as the enemy.
Our Commander in Chief needs to recognize this not only as a horrifying act of terrorism, but as an act of treason. If he doesn’t; if he plays the politically correct game and shows any sympathy for him, he is not a leader, has no love, respect, or compassion for “his” troops as Commander in Chief and should be removed from office immediately.
Those who knew about Hasan’s adamant claims against our military actions and his political comments against our Country's military actions while in uniform, and during wartime posture and position, were obligated to report him. They should be thoroughly investigated and if they don’t have the ability to make hard decisions (this one should have been easy) they should be removed from their offices. If they had done their jobs, Hasan might have been stripped his rank and drummed out of service before he had an opportunity to plan out his traitorous actions. He should have been under investigation based on those comments, and those who failed to act on them carry the guilt of his crimes.

I am rather curious as to your being so quick to put the blame on the current “Commander in Chief”. If your looking to blame a president should you not be looking at the one that got us into this war? I am very curious in deed coming from someone that is a 30 years military person, do you care to explain?

I think you read this a little too fast. I didn't blame him, but he seemed to be going down the sympathetic path again and I was afraid that his support would waffle. I am happy to say that his speech at the memorial was good.
All of the bantering back and forth following my comments and the accusations of racism (not pointed at me, but the two with the running commentary) are uncalled for and extremely out of place when connected to this terrible act. I wish people like them would listen to themselves and get embarrassed and quit.

If now your saying that your not blaming the president then why would you say such a thing. Are you back pedaling now? I still see no fault with the current Commander and Chief and still do not see just cause for your statement, or is it you that is getting embarrassed by what you said and would wish to remove your to quick to post statement.
As to rwj - he is still a racist “with or without” your help patcraw, and I will not never going discontinue the war on discriminatory actions and people and the flushing of racists down the toilet where they belong. I in no ways connect race with the events in Fort Hood, but those that target President Obama at every turn and without just cause or factual reason leaves only one alternative for their disapproval of the man - it is race and without real fact and reasons it is they who plays the race game first.
