Parents should offer answers, not put-downs

Parents and teenagers collide in arguments and bash heads, due to their lack of understanding and awareness of their conflicts. I think parents need to understand their kids more, not by bringing them down, but by giving them answers.

Parents need to have an interest in their children and build a special bond so that when teens need to talk, there will be a connection for teens so they can approach their parents about anything. Teens don't have enough assurance to go and talk to their parents when there is a conflict because there is a lack of trust.

About a year ago, I was talking to my friend about how I don't understand how she can hide the fact that she lies to her parents and doesn't even care. She is doing hard drugs. Drugs are really bad for you and can mess up your life. I asked her why she would ever want to do drugs. I came to the conclusion that she felt it was the only way for her to have friends. I told her it's not the way to do it and that she needs help, mostly from her parents. We decided she should go to her parents and tell them what she was doing. She asked what to do if her parents didn't want to help her. I couldn't really answer that question honestly, so I told her that she would never know until she tried.

When teens know they have done something wrong, they know there will be consequences, but most often they hide it from their parents because there is a lack of trust with their parents. We confide more in our peers than our own parents. We wish we had answers to these types of situations, but we don't and we need them.
