Legislators: Ignore Trenteman's ramblings

(UNEDITED) Charles Trentelman's opinion piece in Sunday's Standard-Examiner belittled the efforts of the Utah legislature to pass nullification laws. The legislature is asserting our state's power to nullify and thus counter those federal laws and regulations which increasingly deny us our inalienable rights.

The Founders recognized the danger of a too-powerful federal government. The government was organized such that the powers naturally vested in the people and their states would not, if the Constitution was adhered to, be wrested from them. Yet many of our rights have been wrested from us. The original safeguards written into the Constitution have been circumvented to the point that the Federal Government has become in many respects the bully Mr. Trentelman describes.

The idea that any state or people must subjugate themselves to the overreaching mandates of the Federal Government is unacceptable to Americans who love liberty and the Constitution. I applaud the efforts of the Utah legislature to re-establish the proper relationship between Utah and the Federal Government through nullification laws.

Come on, Charles, give your head a shake! Don't you want your liberties protected?
