What makes a school great? I have read that: 1) Relationships do. Whether the focus is on students, or teachers or families or administrators or the greater community, relationships make a great school or school district a strong entity. 2) Communication does. To achieve greatness a school and a school district must have excellent communication among all constituents. 3) Values do. Whatever the values are for a particular school or district everyone involved the values need to be purposeful in its endeavors and have that work shaped by its values.

The writer of the May 16 letter, “Some drive as if auditioning for NASCAR racing,” should get a medal. The other day my wife and I were cut off going down Riverdale Road and we both had the some thought. The courtesy of  North Carolina people makes the people of Utah look like we have no courtesy whatsoever. We don’t!  While living in North Carolina, we found the land of NASCAR to have the greatest courtesy and wished that Utah could just have a little.

WASHINGTON — What can a president do when he’s hit simultaneously by three scandals?

Answer: play them off against one another.

I was 12 years old during Sam Ervin’s Watergate hearings, and watched them over the course of a long, hot summer, a time when I seemed to register the startling fact that my parents weren’t infallible and grownups did not necessarily know more about the world than I did. Watergate was empowering in a sense: It told you that the authority figures were flawed, perhaps deeply so, that you should not blindly trust the powerful. Bad men do bad things, and lie about them, and it is our challenge to scrape away that deceit and find the truth beneath.

Pakistan’s National Assembly elections on May 11 provided a significant victory to Nawaz Sharif and his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party. Despite violence, turnout was approximately 60 percent. A peaceful power transition from the governing Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to this opposition party means progress from the nation’s history of military coups. Sharif and his chief political rival, Imran Khan, have pledged to work together.

The letter of May 13, “Administrators turn blind eyes to troubles,” by the Ogden High student is significant. When a responsible young student becomes aware of irresponsible administrators, we know something is very wrong.

I don’t usually cry during breakfast, but your story about Lincoln Masuisui brought tears to this grandmother’s eyes and a lump to my throat (May 16, “Sheriff’s posse joins the act”). Thank you so much for putting such a story right on the front page. What a wonderful way to start the day. And thanks, too, to the members of Weber County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, for making this day so special for a little boy’s sixth birthday.
