OUR VIEW: Maturation program helps students

We wish we didn't have to write this editorial because frankly the opposing side seems foolish to us. In a more reasonable world such opposition wouldn't exist. However, since some will always oppose responsible sex education for older elementary-age students in Utah, it's necessary to stand up for an existing program.

The maturation program allows fifth-grade students in the Davis School District to learn -- via a Powerpoint presentation -- about the differences between males and females, including the reproductive systems of both. The presentation is called, "Growing Up Comes First." The Weber School District also uses the program. In fact, 16 of Utah's 41 school districts utilize it. We think these kinds of programs provide students the opportunity to learn in a responsible manner, answers to questions that many are beginning to wonder about.

According to Shauna Lund, Davis District spokesperson, occasionally district officials receive complaints about the program. Lund also mentions that the district receives requests from parents that more information be provided to students. It seems a no-brainer to us that "Growing Up Comes First" teaches about sexuality issues in a respectful manner with trained professional educators to help students. Nevertheless, the Davis district has received another complaint from a parent who objects that students are learning about breasts, how babies nurse and penises.

There is nothing wrong with learning these things in fifth grade. We'd wager that many problems occur later because children didn't learn about sexuality in a correct environment. Objecting to the maturation program is just plain ridiculous. Having said that, we respect the rights of parents to make choices for their children. To be taught in the maturation program, children have to have a signed consent form from their parents. Parents are also free to send their children to private schools, other alternative schools, or even home-school children.

Parents who object to their kids learning about reproduction can keep them away if they wish. However, if there are any efforts to end the maturation program at a Utah public school, we'll be sure to join efforts to make sure the program is always available to Utah students.
