I am writing in response to the article "WSU tuition going up/Wildcats will see 6 percent increase" from April 1, 2010. In this article it talks about the increase in tuition for mainly Weber State, but also other schools in the state that are getting increases. Surprisingly, Weber States increase is much lower than many others.
I personally think this is stupid. Why do they need to raise tuition? It just makes it so a lot of people can't go or it makes the experience much more stressful. Even if the person going to school isn't fully paying for school, but their parents are it puts stress on the parents and the student. I feel very fortunate however, that I go to Weber State. Yes tuition is expensive, but like I said earlier the tuition raise isn't as much as others.
A few students were asked how they felt about the raise and it ranged from the fact that it makes things much harder for them since they are just barely getting by, to no matter what the pay, they are going to continue to go because it is important. One girl even said it gives her the motivation to keep working harder so she doesn't lose her waivers. We do need to work hard for it, but I really don't see how the tuition raise is important.
Although the raise seems to motivate students to work harder so they can continue to go, it still seems unnecessary to me. Why add more stress to something already stressful? My dad pays for my tuition, but I have tried to help by applying for scholarships and things like that because I want to help him. Especially with how expensive it is getting. Raising the tuition may prevent potential lifesaving doctors, politicians, and teachers from reaching their potential. Why would anyone want to stifle someone's potential?
