Some Hooper politicians keep assuring us that they love our kids. Why do they keep saying this? Action speaks louder than words.
When they were approached about helping kids pay to play sports, they said they couldn't afford it. Three hundred of the kids who participate in West Haven's sport program are Hooper kids. Hooper kids have always loved sports.
West Haven's recreation program runs in the red each year. Sign-ups do not pay the expenses. West Haven has to subsidize their recreation program to the tune of $215,000 each year. When Hooper was asked to kick in $5,000 to help pay expenses, Hooper acted like West Haven was asking for the world.
Hooper can't afford $5,000 for the kids, but they can spend nearly $200,000 for a brand new dump truck it needs like it needs a root canal.
I don't understand its priorities. What's more important, our kids or somebody driving around town in a shiny dump truck? It seems our mayor is very anti-sports. Councilman at large Richard Hull comes from a very sports-minded family. I am sure he's with the kids. I don't know how the rest feel.
It seems to me that West Haven is offering Hooper a very good deal. If Hooper doesn't wake up and smell the roses, it won't be long until only little rich kids can afford to play sports. How far would $5,000 go towards Hooper's building a program of their own? It wouldn't even buy the balls.
Hooper should be thankful instead of acting like jerks.
