OUR VIEW: Josh Powell's evil is banal

After Josh Powell murdered his two sons on Sunday, as well as killing himself in the process, Pierce County, Washington, Sheriff Paul Pastor summed it up best. "What happened here was an act of evil. Do not call it a tragedy because that sanitizes it. This was a terrible act of murder involving two young children," he said."

The murder of Charlie and Braden Powell affects most of us so much because it's a horrible part of a larger story that has consumed Utahns for 26 months. In December 2009, Susan Powell disappeared from her West Valley home. Her husband, Josh Powell was always considered the only person of interest in the case. After he moved to Washington, the case involved a lengthy custody dispute with his missing spouse's family. After Josh Powell's latest legal setback in that dispute, in which he was ordered to submit to a psychosexual evaluation and polygraph exam. On Sunday, after receiving his two boys as part of a supervised visitation, he pushed a social worker out of his home, locked himself and the boys inside, and set fire to the home. Autopsies show the boys suffered "chop injuries," which indicates the vicious nature of the crime.

Conspiracy theorists should check web site

Editor,

I'm writing regarding the letter of Feb. 4, "Conspiracy theories may contain truths." The letter writers should do an internet search for "Plato's Cave" or Plato's Cave of Shadows." I believe they will find some interesting reading there.

Motorcyclists 'talk out of both sides of their mouths'

Editor,

I recently read several comments about someone who had hit a motorcyclist in an intersection. Now, I'm not here to judge anyone or point fingers, but a question continues to nag at me with regard to that subject. I find it very interesting that the state of Utah has what we know as a "No Helmet" law which basically means that when someone goes out and hops on their Harley, they don't have to wear anything to protect themselves in the event of a crash. We also have in the state of Utah, a group called ABATE who advocate for biker's rights, and they also fight for the freedom to retain the right to not have to wear protective gear (helmets to be specific).

Icy parking lot conditions improved at Nordic Center

Editor,

We want to offer our apology to the writer of the Feb. 6 letter, "Icy parking lot at North Fork Park a hazard," and many others who experienced amazingly icy conditions at the Nordic Center parking lot in North Fork Park.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. The writer and his family have been skiing North Fork for many years and we appreciate his support of the trail system. The conditions this season have been remarkable in many ways. Clear, East-coast ice, is just one of those. It's "good snow for you Eastern folk." In fact, for a brief time, we adopted a tag line from Mad River Glen: "North Fork, Ski It if you can." The entire venue received 1.5 inches of rain, 55 degree winds, and then a temperature drop to 16 degrees. This is no excuse for the parking lot, but does explain some of the conditions the writer and others experienced.

Coach laid the foundation for N. Utah women's soccer

Editor,

I am writing this with tears streaming down my face and gratitude in my heart. Tommy Vudhivadhana has retired from coaching the Weber State University Women's Soccer team. This man has been my mentor, friend, traveling family, and coach throughout my soccer career. I grew up with him as my soccer coach for almost 15 years. I owe my success as a soccer player (as a young AYSO All-Star and at Weber State University), my philosophy as a coach, and my love for the game to this man.

Proceeds from land sale should be used to pay bond

Editor,

Last week the Syracuse City Council approved the sale of 60 acres of unused park land to a developer for $1.3 million.

Congress has 'power of the purse' not president

Editor,

Senator Hatch's Feb. 4 guest commentary, "Obama's defense cuts a threat to Hill Air Force Base and national security," is exactly what is wrong with our political system. He seems to have forgotten that Congress has the power of the purse when he blames the president for our country's problems. Career politicians are the cause of our troubles, and he and the rest of his ilk will soon find out we the people have had enough of both parties' failure to do anything but point fingers and play the blame game.

College appreciates help with resource fair

Editor,

I would like to take time to thank all of the many Ogden resourse agencies that took time out of their busy schedules to attend the Student Resourse Fair at Stevens~Henager College on Monday, January 23.

What a pleasure it was to work with all of you as you provided our students with information about all the programs that are available to them to help them make it through these trying economic times. The benefits your agencies provide and educated our students and staff about are invaluable.

December pay date put some veterans in higher tax bracket

Editor,

For years, military pension and survivor benefit checks were sent out the first of the following month. When President Obama signed this year's Defense Authorization Bill, he ordered December 2011 payments made on December 31 instead of January 1. That made 2011 a 13-month year for tax purposes! His "No payday in January with two paydays in December" law is to continue ad infinitum. There was no retiree payday in January 2012; therefore, retirees received not one dollar more for their service and sacrifices, and 2012 will be a 12-month tax year. Obama's 13-month accounting slight-of-hand yielded a "surge" of over $626 million out of retiree pockets into his, while it unfairly shoved many retirees and survivors temporarily into higher tax brackets.

Democrats haven't passed a budget for two years

Editor,

Regarding the letter of Feb. 4, "Racism seems to be alive and well, it is the Democrat controlled Senate that has blocked almost all legislation passed by the House. The Democrats have not passed a budget since President Barack Obama was elected, even when both the Senate and House were Democrat-controlled for two years. My husband began working at the age of 10 shining shoes and spent 23 years as a sergeant in the USAF and I worked wherever I could trying to save for our senior years and resent being called bigoted and uncaring since we are Republicans. It is the Democrat Party that is promoting "class warfare" and doing nothing to help the middle class. We all benefit when the Constitution and Bill of Rights are followed. My prayer is that we will not be deceived into becoming a socialist, facist or communist nation.

Opposing president's policies is not racist

Editor,

I want to respond to the writer of "Racism is alive and well" of Feb 4. I join the writer in opposition to actual racism, and I'm glad that the attitudes of most Americans have shifted to the point where an American of African descent can be elected our President. However, I don't agree with the idea that because our President is black, opposing his policies is racist. I also don't agree with the idea that because many Americans on public assistance are minorities, it's racist to support policies that favor the well to do. In fact, the majority of Americans on public assistance are white. Also, most of the jobs minorities work at were created by financially successful Americans, some of whom are minorities.

Closing Weber detention center may cause more crime

Editor,

It was recently announced that Weber Valley Detention Center will be closed in fiscal year 2013 unless the Legislature chooses to fund it. WVDC (Weber Valley Detention) is the only state ran detention facility left in Utah. The next closest facility is Farmington Bay Youth Center which is contracted out by the State. Law Officers will be taken away from their jobs in order to transport juveniles down to Farmington. If they arrest a juvenile it will take an extra two to three hours just to lock them up. This would take them off the street many hours. This could discourage them from making arrests because of transportation complications and expenses.

Toddler tantrum

OUR VIEW: Lee's headless charge

Like a chicken with its head sliced off, Utah's junior senator is charging in opposition to President Barack Obama's presidential nominations. Mike Lee has vowed to oppose every nominee that Obama presents before the U.S. Senate for approval.

Lee is angry that the president has bypassed accepted Senate custom by appointing nominees when the Senate is in "pro forma" sessions three days apart to stop presidents from appointing nominees that the Senate has blocked. What this means is that Republicans in the Senate are using filibusters to prevent Obama from getting his nominees through.

This is all a technical and legal argument. It needs to be worked out either between the opposing sides -- Democrats and Republicans -- or through the courts. And that latter option will likely come soon. Republicans are challenging Obama's recent appointments.

Komen for the Cure needs more than PR

Talk about closing the barn door after the animals have fled. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure has hired a big-time public relations firm to improve its now-tattered image among millions of American women.

The income classes according to Mr. Romney

Mitt Romney's ill-considered remark about the destitute, "I'm not concerned about the very poor," and his subsequent awkward explanation of it represented something more noteworthy than a rich man's gaffe. The question raised by the episode is not simply whether the candidate can articulate his views more clearly but whether the dire economic circumstances of tens of millions of Americans are truly understood, or can even be acknowledged, by the GOP.
