Honoring the bittersweet role of grandparents in U.S. today

Sunday is National Grandparents Day, but you rarely see ads for gifts because we have our grandkids. What else could we want?

Too many opinions are shaped by propaganda

The Sept. 3 letter, "Obama seems bent on the death of capitalism," has produced yet another example of a serious problem in our representative democracy. The opinions of many people are being shaped by organs of propaganda. The letter writer stated that Obama is dismantling capatalism. He then went on to list some things he believed demostrated that. It seems clear to me that he has heard and seen only what he wants to, what confirms his pre-conceived ideas.

Gang members portrayed as unfeeling, uncaring animals

(UNEDITED)How dare Tim Gurrister, once again, try and convict one of my sons in articles in the Standard-Examiner! (Tool of gang control). I am extremely upset and frustrated that my son, Riqo Perea has been portrayed as an unfeeling, uncaring animal time and time again. Everyone knows he was not given a fair trial and I blame that partly on Gurrister and his ignorance in convicting my son in his articles, tying Riqo to every murder or gang story he writes.

Wet and wild in Morgan

OUR VIEW: Splashing in Morgan city

Morgan city wants a splash pad. Heck, we'd like to have one too -- in our back yards. They're a lot of fun.

And they're popular too. Kids love them. Morgan City Councilman DeOrr Peterson may not be wrong when he says that a splash pad in Morgan may be what it takes "to breathe additional life into town."

So, let it be noted that this editorial board agrees that splash pads are fun.

Peace talks unlikely to succeed without a different approach

For as long as I've been a journalist, I've been covering the Mideast peace process.

I was at Ben Gurion Airport in 1977 when Egyptian President Anwar Sadat landed, and on the White House lawn in 1993 when Bill Clinton, Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin signed the Oslo accords. Back then, a two-state solution seemed possible.

Bus needed to get to new South Ogden Jr. High

Students from H. Guy Child Elementary School were bused to the old South Ogden Jr. High, yet the kids from Marlon Hills Elementary School don't get bused to the new South Ogden Jr. High.

Crosswalk needed near Bonneville High

I am currently a student at Bonneville High. I have an issue with Highway 89/Washington Boulevard. UDOT should consider at least a crosswalk near Hill Top Lanes for students to get to Bonneville High. As of now, that area has no way to cross safely. I have crossed at this spot of couple of times. It is very dangerous because people in cars do not slow down. People like me need to be able to cross safely and even something as simple as a crosswalk may help.

Baseball pros will help youths at Ogden facility

I would like to welcome two great American men to the Ogden area. Robin Jennings and Mike Morgan are two retired major league ball players who are truly interested in working with youth. They have intensions to bring the Ogden area back to the time when youth sports was a huge deal in the Ogden area. More teams, and expanding all sports activities in the Ogden area will give our youth a chance to compete plus give them something to do so they hopefully will stay on the right paths.

Students should stop abusing Medicaid to have babies

I am a member of the predominate religion in this state. I served a mission, got married, went to college and pharmacy school. When I started my family, we were offered Medicaid to pay for our babies and my wife flatly refused. Being members of a religion that emphasized self-reliance, we know that our children are our responsibility and that taking government handouts or expecting others to pay is not just wrong, but immoral.

Judge Kathleen Nelson will be sorely missed

Our family would like to honor Judge Kathleen Nelson, Ogden's juvenile court judge, and let her family, friends and the courts know what a wonderful lady she was.

She was amazing with families and children. She followed through to guide them in the right direction. She truly was passionate about her job and those who came before her. She had that tough motherly love that was needed in the courts. She will be greatly missed by many.

Setting the record straight

Increasingly we live in a world -- alas -- of deliberate misrepresentation and mischaracterization. Or you could call them lies.

Thank God for mainstream, fair-minded journalists like myself, who care for little but truth, justice, and setting the record straight. In that spirit, I offer up the following falsehoods, believed to be true by many of the bewildered among us, along with corrections.

Open letter to parents, teachers students

(UNEDITED) Nearly 600,000 Utah students recently started a new school year. For parents, students and teachers, the new school year offers opportunities and challenges. We remain committed to helping make this year a success for all.

In our Utah classrooms, one of the most important factors for student success is the quality of instruction. Providing high-quality instruction for all Utah children is a critical part of our commitment to the State of Utah. Despite the economic and other challenges we face in public schools, we continue to make progress toward meeting that commitment.

It's hard to maintain lawns

I am writing about code violation for lawns. I try to keep my yard green but without secondary water it is very expensive. I can't afford a $100-plus water bill.

Will Harrison be Ogden's beltway?

(UNEDITED) It was brought to my attention that the WFRC fully intends to support a proposal to make Harrison Boulevard into "Ogden's Beltway." I have to ask if any of your resources have advised you that just, perhaps, Ogden does not want a beltway, and CERTAINLY not down Harrison Blvd.
