(UNEDITED)In these times of self dealing and cronyism, party affiliation means little. For instance, in District 18 the Republican candidate is actually a Democrat, who misled his own party into supporting him, before registering to run as a Republican. He hoped this duplicity would lead to his being unopposed, but a principled Democrat, Betty Sawyer, filed in time to run against him. For County Commission seat B, Democrat Amy Wicks is running against a crony of Ogden's Mayor Godfrey. Godfrey has in the past, used the public Solomon Center to generate campaign cash for his favorite candidates, and did so again this year to try to defeat Wicks. So people can vote for a County Commissioner who Godfrey will operate by remote control, or they can elect Amy Wicks, who is known for her independence and careful study of issues.
Jan Zogmaister, the incumbent for County Commissioner seat A, is running for re-election. A Republican, she has been thoughtful and responsive, and stood up to Powder Mountain by trying to obtain a workable solution to an appalling problem for Weber County residents, created by a Utah Legislature of her own party. For her independence and integrity she deserves reelection.
Lastly, Peter Corroon is running for governor. Paradoxically, this Democrat has a track record of saying no to corporate welfare, and saying yes to fiscal responsibility, while his opponent is tarnished with myriad charges of corruption and financial shenanigans.
In these troubled times, one must choose the person, not the party.
