I would like to respond to M. Jensen Ogden's, Oct. 14th, letter on Social Security. It is correct that Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat, originated the Social Security program. However, there is a bit more to the story. As it was proposed by FDR, that all money was to go into a separate account and never be used for anything other than SS. If it were still in that account, SS would be well funded and the people who paid into it would never have to worry about it going broke. Lyndon B. Johnson, another Democrat, moved the money into the general fund so it could be spent on anything the government wanted. According to FDR's plan, SS would never be taxed. Along came Bill Clinton, another Democrat, and we are now paying income tax on 85% of our SS. FDR's plan was intended to help those who paid into it at retirement time. However, Jimmy Carter, another Democrat, decided that we should give it to everyone in the country, even non-citizens, whether they paid into it or not. FDR had a good and workable plan. However, it was destroyed by other Democrats.
