I want to commend the Davis School Board on taking a stand on those students involved in gang activities will no longer be allowed to participate in extracurricular sports in Davis School District. As a former student athlete both in high school and college, I alway felt is was a privilege/honor to represent the school and the community. Hopefully, students will take notice it's not how good you are athletic wise, but how respectful you are in society.
I can still remember watching the national college championship football game on TV back, I believe in the 90's when the University of Colorado Buffaloes won the national championship. I was shock to see on TV after the final seconds run out many of the players on Colorado were putting up hand/finger gang signs to people in the stands during the winning celebration. It made me sick to my stomach. If some of these kids need to belong to a gang/club, maybe they can start there own - How about the Autism Club / or maybe the Boys Club/Girls club or Food Bank club.
These students will now understand that you must be responsible and accountable for your behavior. In my opinion, it will make a difference in making these athletes leaders instead of followers - It's cool not to be a Gang Member but it's cool to be a student athlete.
