(UNEDITED)I was grateful to see Clyde Faucetts letter on the Pacific war veterans . I have met many veterans of many wars through my travels and have made it a point to sincerely thank them for their service. Many, I have found, and was shocked to discover, had never been thanked, and want no more than just a simple gesture that shows some awareness. Usually, they don't even want that. But to many veterans that simple expression of gratitude often means more than the word can express. It seems that many of us who have never served in the military are apathetic about this particular topic. I never served in the military but I understand that it is to our military men and women we owe our freedoms. They, not politicians, are the ones willing to lay down their lives for our everyday securities, liberties and quality of life we so much take for granted.
They, more than most understand huge diversities, whatever they may be, that grace our country and are very proud to defend those freedoms. So, whatever your agenda, just be thankful it isn't cut short violently, or by any other means. Those who keep it that way are dying for your agendas everyday.
So, show your awareness that the only reason you are waking up today in the U.S.A with all your freedoms and agendas to fulfill, is because someone is willing to lay down their lives selflessly. Our enemies know and fear this. Go ahead and thank that veteran. It just might be the first time he or she was thanked by anyone for their service and sacrifices. It just might make your day too.
