Actions of our "elected" officials resemble actions seen in the "Godfather." Members or acquaintances of our group have received veiled threats via the phone, and derogatory, personal attacks posted on the Internet. While we know where some of comments come from, the people making these attacks have hidden their identity by using pseudo names, but their language patterns give them away. The Kaysville Citizens for Responsible government mounted an effort and it was successful in defeating the bond election for an elaborate police station. We are now getting signatures on three initiatives to get on the ballot in November.
We fought for several weeks to have the city certify our petitions. Legally, the city could not have refused, but we accommodated them by trying to make the changes they wanted. We went to the city council and asked the mayor and the council to please help us in this endeavor and we were able to get the initiatives certified. We then began obtaining signatures. We rented a room at a local restaurant on March 31 for two weeks. The first morning, the owner of the restaurant received a phone call from a person who said he was on the Kaysville City Council and it would not be a good idea for her to allow us there. He mentioned it would be bad for business. We called the number back and found it was the phone number of the newest member of the Kaysville City Council! Later in the day, the restaurant owner received a phone call from a woman who did not identify herself and blocked her phone number. The words she used were similar to those people used during the bond election, about how we should not support the defeat of the bond and that she would boycott the stores.
The mayor and the city council should represent all of us, not just a few. Also, the Lt. governor gave the city a pass on using city money to promote the bond, which did not show the "pro," and the "con" position. The city was warned to follow the law in the future!
